Stassi Schroeder Defends Meghan Markle’s Netflix Show ‘I Want the Escapism’

Meghan Markle’s new Netflix show, With Love, Meghan, has been met with some scathing criticism as she brings viewers inside her California home for homemaking tips, a la Martha Stewart.

Or, as The Guardian wrote, “The mildest way to describe this show is as a ghastly artefact of a particular cultural era that recently met its apocalypse.”

But Stassi Schroeder is a self-proclaimed stan of Meghan, 43, and she watched the first episode of the show, which the streaming giant dropped on Tuesday, March 4. Not surprisingly, she offered a different point of view.

“Anyone complaining about this like they’re expecting this to be something they can relate to, that’s not the point,” the Vanderpump Rules alum, 36, said via her Instagram story. “I love this. This is something I absolutely cannot f—ing relate to.”

The time has come to journey to Montecito. After much anticipation, speculation and fleeting sneak peeks, Meghan Markle‘s With Love, Meghan, drops on Netflix on Tuesday, March 4, at 3 a.m. ET — but before that, Us Weekly nabbed and watched advance screeners of all eight episodes. Here’s everything we learned from binging the Duchess […]

Her reaction matched what she said on her “Pop Culture Hour” podcast, which she recorded before watching.

“I wanna see this unattainable, beautiful life of the duchess making fruit tarts and what China she uses,” Schroeder explained on the episode that aired on Wednesday. “That’s not my life and I want the escapism of something that’s so aspirational that I don’t even think I could attain it … It’s a fantasy.”

With Love, Meghan, produced by Markle and Prince Harry’s Archewell Productions, highlights Markle’s cooking, gardening and more, alongside her celebrity friends. In addition to a very quick cameo by Prince Harry, Mindy Kaling, Alice Waters and Abigail Spencer stop by throughout the series.

It’s part of the $100 million deal that Meghan and Harry signed with Netflix in 2020, following the 2022 Harry and Meghan docuseries and 2024 Polo documentary.

Schroeder conceded that even as a fan, she can be critical of Meghan. She sees in Meghan’s social media why people might call her inauthentic. From Schroeder’s view, that’s a product of the duchess finally stepping out from the shadow of the royal family.

“She is authentic,” Schroeder insisted. “We’re just not used to that type of authentic person.”

“I just feel like there is a real girly in that soul, but she has been so tormented by the royal family that it’s like she can’t deprogram herself,” she continued. “And she wants to be authentically herself. But I feel like she needs to take time to figure out who authentically she is.”

That way, as Schroeder explained, Meghan would be focusing on herself and not proving to “specific people” that they’re wrong about her.

“I think when your energy is to prove people wrong, you’re so busy focusing on that that you’re not being your authentic self,” she said. “I wish she could just not think about them and just be like, ‘I wanna do this for me. I wanna be me.’ I think that we would be seeing different product coming from her.”
