Andrew Rannells Says His Netflix Show With Lena Dunham Is ‘Girls-Adjacent’ (Exclusive)

For Girls fans who just wanna have fun, the upcoming onscreen reunion between Andrew Rannells and Lena Dunham should be on their radar.

“We finished shooting a new series called Too Much for Netflix,” Rannells, 46, exclusively told Us Weekly at the opening night of Stephen Sondheim’s Old Friends on April 8 at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre in New York City. “It’ll be out in July.”

Too Much marks Dunham and Rannells’ first onscreen reunion since Girls ended in 2017. “It’s not Girls, but it’s Lena and it’s me — so it’s sort of Girls-adjacent,” Rannells teased to Us.

The duo has stayed close off camera. Rannells even made a surprise cameo in Dunham’s 2022 film Catherine Called Birdy.

After breaking out at the 2010 South by Southwest Film Festival with Tiny Furniture, Dunham went on to create HBO’s award-winning series Girls, which ran for six seasons from 2012 to 2017. Now, she’s back behind the camera as cocreator and executive producer of Too Much alongside her husband, British musician Luis Felber.

Lena Dunham is taking a step away from several projects — including her upcoming Netflix series Too Much — to avoid unwanted commentary on her body. “I was not willing to have another experience like what I’d experienced around Girls at this point in my life,” Dunham, 38, said in a profile with The New […]

The new 10-episode series centers on Jesscia (Megan Stalter), a New York workaholic in her mid-thirties that moves from New York to London after a messy breakup. Jessica thought she’d written off dating forever, but when she meets Felix (Will Sharpe) — a total walking red flag — their wild connection proves impossible to ignore.

“Now they have to ask themselves: do Americans and Brits actually speak the same language?,” the official tagline reads.

The star-studded cast also includes Adèle Exarchopoulos, Richard E. Grant, Rita Wilson, Stephen Fry, Emily Ratajkowski, Rhea Perlman, Adwoa Aboah, Daisy Bevan, Dean-Charles Chapman, Janicza Bravo, Kaori Momoi, Leo Reich, Michael Zegen, and Prasanna Puwanarajah.

Prior to returning to the small screen, the actor visited the Great White Way last month to celebrate an icon. Rannells walked the red carpet alongside other Broadway stars and celebrities, including Matt Doyle, Alex Newell and Kristin Chenoweth to celebrate the tribute revue honoring Stephen Sondheim’s legacy.

Rannells pointed to the 1991 PBS adaptation of Into the Woods starring Bernadette Peters as his favorite Sondheim show. (Peters and Lea Salonga lead the revue.)

Into the Woods was the show that really solidified — or created — my love of musical theater,” he told Us. “That PBS version, I think it’s the most perfect, perfect version of that show ever. So I would say just that whole production.”

Doyle also couldn’t help but gush over the Broadway legend. “Growing up and watching Bernadette sing ‘Move On’ was my favorite Sondheim moment as a kid,” he said. “I was like, ‘Oh, this is what I have to do.’”

Stephen Sondheim’s Old Friends is now playing at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre through Sunday, June 16.
