A Britney Spears biopic is coming, and while the anticipation may drive you so crazy you just can’t sleep, don’t let it keep you up all night — there’s still a long way to go.
Spears first teased the project in April 2024, writing via X, “Excited to share with my fans that I’ve been working on a secret project with #MarcPlatt. He’s always made my favorite movies … stay tuned 🌹🎥”
Universal Pictures won the film rights last August to Spears’ 2023 memoir, The Woman in Me, after a competitive auction process, and the film was officially announced shortly thereafter. As of May 2025, it’s still in the early stages of production, with Wicked director Jon M. Chu and producer Marc Platt both on board.

What Will the Movie Cover?
The movie will be based on Spears’ memoir, The Woman in Me. The book documented Spears’ life and rise to superstardom, highlighting her personal and legal challenges along the way. While we don’t know what the film will include, Spears held little back in the memoir, opening up about her relationship with Justin Timberlake, her dynamic with her parents amid her infamous conservatorship and the pressures she faced as one of the most famous artists in the world.

How Much Influence Will Britney Have on Her Own Biopic?
Chu told Entertainment Weekly in a January 2025 interview that Spears will have a major say in the movie.
“She’s going to be very involved,” he said. “I haven’t really started anything fully yet, but she will be very involved in this. I have ideas and things, an approach, but it’s very early.”
He added, “I want to do her justice and tell her story right. But we’ll see. We’re developing it now and it’s a long road ahead.”
Who Will Play Britney Spears?
We don’t know yet, but that hasn’t stopped fans from speculating. Ariana Grande, who worked with Chu and Platt on Wicked, has been a rumored possibility, as have Sabrina Carpenter and Millie Bobby Brown.
“None of this is true,” Chu wrote via X. “Sounds exciting but have not had one conversation about casting this movie yet. We are way too early in development. Sorry.”
Olivia Holt has seen her name surface in rumors as well, and she told Variety in February 2025 that it “would be a dream” to play Spears on screen.
Though the “DeuxMoi” podcast reported in May 2025 that Spears had given her feedback on actresses to play her and the film would cast an unknown talent, a source close to the film told Us Weekly that is not true.
“There is no script and no casting has begun yet,” the source said.
