Mom Books a Family Vacation After Not Going Away for Years. Her 25-Year-Old Daughter’s Reaction Shocks Her

NEED TO KNOW

  • A Mumsnet user was caught off guard when her 25-year-old daughter invited her partner of six years to a family vacation
  • “They’ve been together since she was 19, but live about 7 hours away so we don’t see them much,” the mom explained
  • Now, the daughter is refusing to come on the trip without him

A mom is mapping out her emotions after a vacation planning hiccup.

The mother of two adult children detailed on the community forum Mumsnet that she and her husband planned their first vacation in years for their family of four — but one of their daughters provided a plot twist.

“I was looking forward to this trip. Everything was going fine until my 25-year-old daughter asked to bring her partner,” she recalled. “I don’t have anything against him, but this is a family holiday.”

“I explained this to my daughter and she said she doesn’t want to come if she can’t bring her partner as she sees him as family too,” she continued, before adding more context about the couple. “They’ve been together since she was 19, but live about 7 hours away so we don’t see them much.”

Now, the mother is wondering if she’s being unreasonable for wanting the trip to include only the immediate family, sans her daughter’s partner.

“Am I being unreasonable for thinking she doesn’t need to do everything with him and she should still come on vacation?” she asked the forum.

People on Mumsnet had mixed reactions to the situation.

“You just have to accept her answer of not going and leave it at that. Causing a fuss because she doesn’t want to go without her partner will get you no where,” one reader replied. “You’ve offered something, she’s declined. that’s that. Although I do think you’re being unreasonable not inviting her partner when they’ve been together 6 years.”

Another person agreed, commenting, “I wouldn’t be impressed had my mother done the same and then proceeded to guilt trip me about it.”

Meanwhile, a third user simply recommended to the concerned mother, “Suggest they come = they pay for themselves.”
