Two bodies of two people were recovered from a sunken boat in Washington state’s Possession Sound after they were declared missing on Wednesday, May 21, according to KIRO 7, My Northwest and Herald Net.

The Everett Police Department (EPD) found the boat’s owner, a man in his 60s, and his co-worker, a woman in her 40s, on Saturday, May 31. The boat owner’s son, a man in his 20s, is still missing and presumed drowned. None of the boaters’ identities have been publicly revealed.

Four passengers were on board when the 26-foot boat sank on Wednesday, May 21, around 1 p.m. local time. The EPD began receiving calls about the sinking ship that was approximately 200 feet from the Possession Sound shore. Possession Sound is 29 miles northwest of Seattle.

“People were just out recreationally shrimping, and the person reported that the boat started taking on water,” EPD spokesperson Natalie Given told KIRO 7. “But as to what specifically caused this, that’s still under investigation.”

Once the boat began to sink, another boater was able to rescue one of the four passengers, a man in his 50s. The man was reportedly uninjured and later evaluated at a hospital.

EPD located the boat the next day, on Thursday, May 22. It was found approximately 165 feet below the water’s surface and positioned upside down.  The marine unit then created a recovery plan that the non-profit Innerspace Exploration Team assisted in executing.

The EPD and Innerspace Exploration Team worked with the U.S. Coast Guard, Everett Fire Department and utilized a helicopter, rescue boats, drones, fire rescue swimmers and land-based teams for the search.

The search has “brought a measure of solace to the grieving family by recovering two of the three missing individuals from the tragic incident in Possession Sound,” EPD Chief John DeRousse said, per KIRO 7. “While we continue to hope for the recovery of the third, we extend our heartfelt appreciation to all involved for their commitment to this challenging mission.”

The Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s Office is determining the cause and manner of the two deaths.
