Every fall, I buy a few new pairs of jeans, certain that each cut or wash will become my favorite. It’s left me overwhelmed by options and completely unsure how to wear any of them. Before I repeated my past mistakes this season, I asked a stylist for the four essential pairs of jeans I need in my capsule wardrobe.

She calls these the “new skinny jeans,” because they are “really comfortable” and forgiving thanks to the loose fit. Since they have “so much volume,” Brandt suggests wearing them with a tight top and leg-elongating low-profile sneakers or ballet flats and finishing the look with a structured baguette bag to “match the cool factor.”

While these jeans were made popular in the ’90s, they are “timeless,” says Brandt. “They’re perfect for the person who is hanging on to their skinny jeans but wants a more classic look,” she adds. Since the fit is relaxed, you avoid “looking like an ice cream cone” when opting for loose tops. Brandt recommends styling them with a cropped cardigan and top-handle bag for a “classic look.” For a pop of pattern, tie a silk scarf in your hair.
