The cast of Clueless is totally buggin’ over their latest reunion!
To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the 1995 coming-of-age comedy, Clueless stars Alicia Silverstone, Elisa Donovan and Breckin Meyer — along with director Amy Heckerling, costume designer Mona May and casting director Marcia Ross — reunited for a screening and panel at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles on Saturday, June 7.
In an exclusive chat with PEOPLE at the event, Silverstone, 48, shared that her 14-year-old son Bear became an early fan of Clueless.
“I remember when my son was 5, when he first saw it,” she says. “And the only reason I would allow that, because I don’t think it’s appropriate for 5 year olds, is because it was on that big screen that we saw it at the cemetery. He didn’t know what was going on.”
“The only thing he took away was the kiss at the end. He started kissing me more. It was so sweet,” she continues. “And I think he liked it. And then he’s liked it all along. I think he really likes this film.”
Bear, who said he’s seen Clueless “maybe four times,” joined his mom at the event to celebrate the film’s milestone anniversary.
Clueless hit theaters in 1995 and was loosely inspired by Jane Austen’s novel Emma. The cast also included Paul Rudd, Stacey Dash, Donald Faison, Brittany Murphy and Dan Hedaya. A short-lived sitcom starring Rachel Blanchard as Cher aired from 1996 to 1999.
In April, Silverstone announced that she would bring back the character for a sequel series for Peacock. “Totally buggin’… in the best way 💁♀️✨,” Silverstone wrote on Instagram, alongside a still and a GIF from Clueless and a screenshot of Variety’s report about the project.
Plot details for the series are unknown, but Variety reported that it is a follow-up to the movie. Gossip Girl creators Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage are writing with Jordan Weiss. Heckerling, who wrote and directed the film, is involved as an executive producer, alongside Silverstone and producer Robert Lawrence.
Silverstone has reprised Cher over the years, including in Rakuten’s 2023 Super Bowl commercial. In 2018, she donned the yellow plaid skirt and jacket for Lip Sync Battle, performing to Iggy Azalea’s “Fancy” with a set reminiscent of Cher’s bedroom. Silverstone even recreated a scene alongside her son Bear in a hilarious 2021 TikTok clip.
While Silverstone told PEOPLE at Saturday’s event that she can reveal “nothing” about the TV sequel, Heckerling said she is “thrilled to death” about it. When asked if she ever thought she’d revisit her character, Silverstone said, “I didn’t. And then I did it for the Super Bowl, yeah, and it was so much fun. We did it really at the Super Bowl.”
