Dave Franco and Alison Brie’s chemistry goes beyond the big screen.
The Together costars began dating shortly after meeting in New Orleans in 2011. They got engaged in August 2015 and wed in 2017. Over the years, their romantic relationship has also been a professional one as they’ve worked on several projects together, both as costars and with Franco directing.
In July 2025, Brie opened up to PEOPLE about what it’s like working alongside her husband, saying, “I feel like every time we do a new artistic endeavor together, we learn so much about each other and come closer, and I fall in love with him in new ways.”
A few months earlier, Brie told Franco during an interview with PEOPLE that she finds it “very attractive” seeing him work on set.
“I am always so in awe of you when we’re on set together,” Brie said, while Franco added, “We just gain more and more respect for each other.”
From meeting in the Big Easy to working alongside each other, here’s everything to know about Dave Franco and Alison Brie’s relationship.
Franco and Brie met during Mardi Gras in 2011
In 2011, Franco and Brie met in New Orleans while celebrating Mardi Gras — “where all great love stories begin,” the actress joked during a July 2020 appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.
As Brie explained to PEOPLE in July 2025, a mutual friend who was with them in New Orleans played matchmaker after realizing there was an attraction between the pair. After sharing a drink spiked with the party drug molly, they were “lip-locked” for the rest of the night.
“We had a great two days together,” Brie continued. “When I did my walk of shame in the morning, I accidentally stole his perfect white T-shirt, and he had to reach out to me to get it back. At the end of the trip, I wrote my phone number on it and I hid it in his bag, so he found it on the way to the airport and texted.”
They got engaged in August 2015
In August 2015, a rep for Brie confirmed to PEOPLE that she and Franco had gotten engaged.
During a July 2025 interview at the Los Angeles premiere of Together, Franco shared that he only allows Brie to watch the “embarrassing” proposal video once a year.
Franco explained that he wanted to propose during their trip to Big Sur, Calif., though he didn’t have a ring yet because he knew Brie wanted to choose it with him and have it made by her friend. But, he got a “placeholder ring” — and had the silver Zorro mask that Brie was wearing when they first met during Mardi Gras.
“I was like, ‘Okay, I don’t have the actual ring, but I have the mask.’ And that’s going to be this sweet thing where she’s going to realize, I kept this mask from the first time we met, which kind of proves, this was love at first sight,” the Neighbors actor said.
When it came time for the proposal, Franco took Brie to a spot with a stunning view in Big Sur and told her he wanted to take her photo. Brie looked out at the view while Franco was videotaping, and when she turned around, he was on one knee wearing the mask and holding the placeholder ring. But, there was one problem: Brie didn’t remember the mask.
“I mean, I remember it from the weekend, but I had no idea he had kept it all the time,” Brie said, while Franco added, “What she sees is, I’m wearing this stupid Zorro mask and holding up this janky ring.”
Though it didn’t turn out to be the romantic proposal he imagined it to be, it provides a good laugh once a year — the only time Franco will allow.
“I don’t have any ownership,” Brie said, while Franco added that he knows she’ll send the video “to everyone she knows.”
They married in 2017
Franco and Brie tied the knot in March 2017. That month, the actor told Entertainment Tonight that their nuptials were “intimate,” and “really fun.”
“It was great, it was really special,” he said.
As for Brie, the actress shared during a 2018 appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen that her favorite moment from the wedding was the vows.
“We wrote our own and didn’t know what the other person was going to say,” she said at the time. “It’s funny to hear them out loud and you feel like, ‘We said all the same things that we want to be for each other.’ That was very sweet.”
That November, Brie told PEOPLE that being married made her feel “so settled” and “more free.”
“It’s great,” she continued. “So now, let’s go do whatever we want. Onward and upward.”
Brie said the key to their marriage is respect
After being asked during an April 2022 appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show about her “approach to love,” Brie said that “respect” was the secret to her and Franco’s happy marriage and partnership.
“I think we respect each other so much and we’re so kind to one another,” the How to Be Single actress said. “We really take care with the way we speak to one another on a daily basis and it makes a big difference I think.”
The actress went on to say that from the first day they met, there’s been “no games.”
“It was like, ‘I really like you.’ ‘I really like you too,’ ” she said. “And every day since then I’m like, ‘God I’m in love with you.’ ‘I love you too.’ There’s something nice about that.”
Brie added, “We don’t have enough time to mess around.”
They’ve starred in multiple movies together
Franco and Brie’s professional partnership dates back to May 2013, two years after they began dating. The pair starred in a Funny or Die skit about what it takes to be Franco’s dream girl.
In June 2017, Franco and Brie starred in their first movie together, The Little Hours. During a January 2017 interview with The Hollywood Reporter promoting the movie, the two were asked what they learned about each other while on set. Franco joked, “We learned that Alison should not be on set while I’m having sex scenes with other women.”
“I left for those. I did leave for those,” Brie added. “It was so wonderful to work together. So easy, so wonderful to work with someone that you’re getting married to.”
The couple went on to appear alongside each other in 2017’s The Disaster Artist. Three years later, Brie had one of the starring roles in Franco’s directorial debut, horror film The Rental. In July 2020, Brie told PEOPLE that watching Franco in a directing role made her fall in love with him “all over again.”
“I enjoyed watching him work with everybody and seeing the crew fall in love with him because he was so collaborative and so passionate,” she said. “His enthusiasm on set is infectious and it made me fall in love with him all over again.”
Their professional collaboration carried into 2021, when they brought a romantic comedy they had written during quarantine — titled Somebody I Used to Know, which also starred Brie — to Prime Video.
Now, the pair are starring alongside each other in Together, in which they play a married couple named Millie and Tim who literally grow closer and closer. The film was released in theaters on July 30.
