All About the Blue Bloods Spinoff Boston Blue (Including the Sneak Peek Donnie Wahlberg Shared!)

NEED TO KNOW

  • Boston Blue will star Donnie Wahlberg, reprising his role from Blue Bloods
  • Blue Bloods ended its 14 season run in December 2024
  • Other Boston Blue cast members include Ghostbusters star Ernie Hudson

The Blue Bloods legacy will continue in the upcoming show, Boston Blue.

Blue Bloods, the long-running police procedural starring Tom Selleck as police commissioner Frank Reagan, ended in December 2024, after 14 seasons. Donnie Wahlberg, who played detective Danny Reagan since the first episode of the CBS series, will reprise his role in the new spinoff, Boston Blue.

Notably, the new show wasn’t originally conceived as a Blue Bloods spinoff. According to Deadline, the original plot centered around an LAPD cop who transfers to Boston, but since Wahlberg is associated with the city in real life, CBS reworked it to be about his Blue Bloods character.

In May 2025, at a press event for the network’s fall 2025 schedule, TVLine reported that Wahlberg assured “no Blue Bloods fans will be disappointed” with Boston Blue.

“Danny’s story will continue the Reagan family’s. You can’t have Danny without Reagans,” he explained. “There’ll be connective tissue to the old family. But we’re also going to get to discover a new family and carry on the tradition of telling their stories and still telling the Reagan stories.”

Here’s everything to know about the Blue Bloods spinoff, Boston Blue, including what the show is about, who is in the cast and when it will premiere.

What is Boston Blue about?

Boston Blue follows detective Danny Reagan (Wahlberg), who moves to Boston to join the city’s police department.

There, Danny is assigned a partner, Detective Lena Silver (Sonequa Martin-Green), the eldest daughter of the Silvers, a prominent law enforcement family.

Since Danny’s life is in New York, it is currently unknown why he would make the move to Boston, and if his transfer is voluntary or mandatory.

That said, Danny’s home life looks different than it once did: He’s a widower whose children are now adults.

How is Boston Blue connected to Blue Bloods?

Boston Blue is being described as a “universe expansion” of Blue Bloods, per Deadline.

Danny Reagan, who Wahlberg portrayed in all 14 seasons of Blue Bloods, is the main character of Boston Blue. But so far, no other Blue Bloods alums have been announced for the new series.

Still, fans are hopeful that Danny’s longtime partner, detective Maria Baez (Marisa Ramirez), will appear, especially after the romantic moment they shared when Danny asked her out on a date in the Blue Bloods series finale.

“I pushed a lot for some closure with that,” Wahlberg explained to Variety, referring to Danny and Maria. “I went to [writer] Siobhan O’Connor, and I was like, ‘Listen, you’ve got to do something.’ ”

“‘They don’t need to go get married, but something would be nice, just to show that there may be a future for them, or that their relationship has really evolved,’ ” he recalled telling O’Connor.

Who is in the cast of Boston Blue?

The Boston Blue cast includes Wahlberg reprising his role of detective Danny Reagan, and Martin-Green, who will play detective Lena Silver.

According to Deadline, at a Paramount press conference in May 2025, Martin-Green said, “We love the Reagans. We have all loved the Reagans for so long. Being Detective Lena Silver, who comes from a prominent law enforcement family, you will love the Silvers too.”

“I’m super excited for this partnership, and to be back in the CBS family,” the Star Trek: Discovery alum added.

Other cast members include Ghostbusters icon Ernie Hudson, who will step up to the pulpit as Reverend Peters, the patriarch of the Silver family, and a pastor at a historic Baptist Church in Boston, according to Deadline.

Psych star Maggie Lawson is also part of the project as Sarah Silver, Lena’s stepsister and the superintendent of the Boston police department, per the outlet.

Most recently, The Better Sister star Gloria Reuben was tapped to play the Silver matriarch and Boston’s district attorney Mae Silver.

When will Boston Blue premiere?

Boston Blue will premiere this upcoming fall on CBS, though an exact release date has not been announced.

The new spinoff will air Friday nights at 10 p.m. ET, the time slot formerly filled by Blue Bloods, per TV Insider.

It will follow Fire Country and its new spinoff, Sheriff Country.

Is there a trailer for Boston Blue?

As of right now, there is no official trailer for Boston Blue, but a teaser was shared in May 2025.

In the 10-second snippet, Wahlberg gives a quick intro to the spinoff. “Can’t wait for you to see my new series, Boston Blue,” he says while sneak peek clips flash on the screen.

Where can I watch Boston Blue?

Boston Blue will air new episodes on CBS, and be available to stream the next day on Paramount+.
