John Proctor might be the villain of The Crucible, but the Broadway play inspired by the famous show apparently made the perfect date night for rumored couple Andrew Garfield and Monica Barbaro.
Garfield, 41, and Barbaro, 34, recently saw a production of John Proctor Is The Villain at the Booth Theatre in New York City.
“New students at Helen County High: Thanks for joining us, Andrew Garfield, Monica Barbaro and Bonnie Milligan!!” a Sunday, May 4, post on the show’s Instagram read, also mentioning Broadway star Milligan, 41.
Garfield and Barbaro both wore baseball caps as they posed onstage with the cast, including 2025 Tony Award nominees Sadie Sink, Gabriel Ebert, Fina Strazza, playwright Kimberly Belflower and director Danya Taymor.

John Proctor Is The Villain, which recently earned seven Tony nods including Best Play, tells the story of a group of high school girls in rural Georgia in 2018, during which their English class is assigned to study Arthur Miller’s The Crucible. Throughout the lesson plans, the teens begin to question their beliefs about feminism, relationships and more.
“I know what it feels like to live in such a small bubble,” Sink, 22, told Teen Vogue in April about playing Shelby in the production. “That’s what I grew up in, and that sense of community and the role that the church plays in that, and how that can really warp some views and just make your world seem a lot smaller.”
She added, “I think about what has changed between now and then. Things may look a little bit different, but… are they, you know?”

Despite a chilling topic, Sink hopes audiences can understand the underlying themes of John Proctor Is the Villain.
“I feel so safe and inspired by the people I’m with right now on this play, and the conversations we’re having,” Sink stressed to the outlet. “During a time where, like, every day there’s something new in this administration that gets you down, having that place to go to every day, it’s like, Okay, we’re working on something. We’re creating something that’s important. Find that sense of community, that outlet for you.”
While John Proctor Is the Villain has only been open for a few months, it’s already attracted sold-out crowds of theatergoers like Garfield and Barbaro.
News broke in February that Garfield, a Broadway and West End veteran himself, and the A Complete Unknown actress were an item. Neither Garfield nor Barbaro has addressed the dating speculation. Us Weekly reached out for comment at the time.
