Ansel Elgort Reunites with John Green in Indiana to Visit a Special Location from The Fault in Our Stars

NEED TO KNOW

  • John Green published his young adult novel, The Fault in Our Stars, in 2012
  • Two years later, the novel was adapted into a film starring Ansel Elgort as Augustus Waters and Shailene Woodley as Hazel Grace Lancaster
  • Elgort recently visited Green, and the two took a trip to a landmark location tied to Gus and Hazel’s story

Ansel Elgort made a special stop on his recent cross-country road trip.

The actor, 31, shared a photo of himself and John Green, taking a selfie together on the author’s phone. In the caption, he opened up about reuniting with the author behind The Fault in Our Stars, which Elgort starred in the film adaptation of opposite Shailene Woodley.

“Recently drove across the country and made a great stop in Indiana to see John Green! He took me to see the actual funky bones!” he said, referencing the book and film.

The Fault in Our Stars is Green’s fourth novel and tells the bittersweet story of a teenage cancer patient who meets and falls in love with a teen from her cancer support group. It has sold more than 23 million copies worldwide. The film was likewise a success and served as a launching pad for Elgort’s career.

“If you remember from TFiOS, Gus takes Hazel Grace there because the artist is Dutch, (Joep van Lieshout). He then surprises her with Dutch cheese and tomato sandwich (the tomato’s were Mexican) and tells her that they are going to Amsterdam!!!” he wrote.

The two also reunited earlier this summer, when Elgort and Nat Wolff were on hand as Green was honored with the Pioneering Spirit Award at the 2025 Thirst Gala held at SLS Beverly Hills.

The two The Fault in Our Stars costars presented the award to Green, who was recognized for his work as both an author and an activist.

Elgort’s photo from the latest reunion between himself and TFiOS author comes just ahead of Esther Earl‘s birthday, which Green has referred to as “Esther Day.”

John and brother Hank Green’s befriended Earl, part of the pair’s devoted fanbase. She served as the inspiration for the author to finish the book.

Earl died of thyroid cancer in 2010. Before her death and with her approval, the brothers determined they’d continue to celebrate her life and legacy on her birthday in the years that followed. Earl would have turned 31 on Aug. 3.
