Apple Martin’s Fave ‘90s Looks to ‘Steal’ From Mom Gwyneth’s Closet: ‘Heaven on Earth’

Apple Martin, daughter of Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin, is stepping into her own spotlight, revealing a desire to forge her own path — but naturally, that doesn’t preclude her favorite pastime, which is to “steal” clothes from her mom’s closet.

In a tete-a-tete with Interview Magazine Editor-in-Chief Mel Ottenberg, published Wednesday, April 2, Apple, 20, discussed everything from college life (“a little tense” but the “vibes are great”) to her pre-law career aspirations (“I’ll just be Elle Woods”) and her burgeoning fashion sense.

As for the latter, the former Interview Magazine summer intern admitted her look is still evolving. Her go-to uniform is centered around understated classics: “Doc Martens — my red Oxfords, jeans, a white T-shirt and a jacket,” as she told Ottenberg. On the other hand, like her famous mother, she also has a thing for capital-F fashion. “Fun and fabulous stuff,” as Martin put it.

“I feel like my style hasn’t been fully actualized yet, but I’m slowly getting more into it,” she explained. Her internship at Interview in the summer of 2024 played a key role in her sartorial awakening. Ditto for the magazine feature, which marks her first-ever interview and photoshoot.

“Honestly, the Interview shoot made me be like, ‘Oh my God, I need to start having more fun [with fashion] and not be scared,’” she said. The shoot itself showcased her chameleonic range, featuring a mix of collegiate-chic pieces, from a Celine pleated miniskirt and block-heeled Thom Browne loafers to a glamorous Valentino furry coat and of- the-moment officecore, like the Saint Laurent suit seen on every (other) It Girl as of late, including Hailey Bieber and Elle Fanning.

Her go-to place to “shop” is her mother’s closet, which Martin said is both organized and easy to steal from. “She lets me steal stuff because she’s like, ‘I saved it all so that you could steal it,’” she shared. “My absolute favorite stuff is her old Calvin Klein from the ’90s. I have a lot of it, and it’s the best thing in the world. Going into her archive closet is just heaven on earth.”

Martin recalled a specific throwback look that she (and many a Pinterest user) is still obsessed with. “She’s in, like, a cheetah print coat — hair clips, sunnies and some cool wedged sandals. And I love that.” Beyond her mother, Martin cited Jane Birkin as a style icon, praising her “little babydoll dresses,” but for day-to-day, she tends to “pull a lot from the ’90s supermodel vibe.”

In the beauty department, Martin favors a bolder brand of glam. “I want fun eyeshadow and fun clothes,” she said. “A really light blue matte eyeshadow with fun ’60s little downturned eyeliner.”

Ottenberg suggested that she try the look when she went out with her friends that night, but the undergraduate is more likely to experiment with loud makeup when she’s dressing “low-pro,” per usual, which is how Ottenberg described her style as an intern at the magazine. “If you’re in jeans and a T-shirt and have a fun thing happening on your face, it’s your own,” she told him.

No doubt we’ll see more of Martin, whether on Chanel’s front row (again) or on the cover of (another) magazine. After all, even her cinematic role model, Legally Blonde’s Elle Woods, played by Reese Witherspoon, was studied in fashion — and wearing color, for that matter.
