Ariel Winter found out via text that her Modern Family costar Eric Stonestreet got hitched.
While chatting with PEOPLE in 10’s Makho Ndlovu to promote her new Apple TV+ show The Sisters Grimm, Winter, 27, revealed that she found out about Stonestreet’s surprise wedding through her Modern Family group chat before the actor, 54, publicly announced his marriage to Lindsay Schweitzer.
“We literally have a group chat going right now, and he sent us all- he didn’t tell us that they were doing that. They, like, invited just their close friends and family at their house where they are. Like, literally, I think they had maybe 10 people there,” Winter tells PEOPLE. “And they, like, invited them over for something and just did that. Came out and got married.”
She continues, “It was very sweet. And then they just sent us the pictures in the group chat, and it was really sweet, and, of course, we congratulated them.”
PEOPLE confirmed that Stonestreet married his longtime love in an intimate wedding in their Kansas City dream home on Sept. 8. The couple revealed that they tied the knot the following day on Instagram, with Stonestreet captioning a few wedding photos, “It’s my birthday and guess what I got.”
“I love them,” Winter gushes of the newlyweds. “Eric and Lindsay are absolutely incredible. She’s so wonderful. She’s been a part of our family really for a long time, and I’m just so happy for them because she’s awesome. So I’m so happy that they made that happen.”

Winter starred as Alex Dunphy in Modern Family alongside Stonestreet, who played Cameron Tucker, for 11 seasons from its premiere in September 2009 to its finale in April 2020. Julie Bowen (Claire Dunphy), Ty Burrell (Phil Dunphy), Sarah Hyland (Haley Dunphy), Nolan Gould (Luke Dunphy), Jesse Tyler Ferguson (Mitchell Pritchett), Sofia Vergara (Gloria Delgado-Pritchett), Ed O’Neill (Jay Pritchett) and Rico Rodriguez (Manny Delgado) were also among those who starred in the hit sitcom.
Back in July, Stonestreet told PEOPLE that the plan was to tie the knot in his Kansas City home.
“Well, I’ve said we’re building a house to host a wedding, and we’re still on track to do that,” Stonestreet, who announced his engagement in August 2021, said. “We’re almost done with the house, and that’s been our plan all along.”
He continued at the time, “We got engaged and then all of a sudden got an opportunity to build a house, and I thought, no better way to start a relationship than literally building a foundation. So that’s our plan and we’re still on track for that.”
The Sisters Grimm premieres on Apple TV+ on Friday, Oct. 3.
