At Least 11 People Injured, Suspect in Custody Following ‘Random’ Stabbing at a Michigan Walmart: Police

NEED TO KNOW

  • At least 11 people were stabbed at a Michigan Walmart on July 26
  • The suspect, who has only been identified by police as a 42-year-old man, was taken into custody
  • Five of the victims are in serious condition, and the other six are in critical condition

Multiple people were injured during a stabbing attack at a Michigan Walmart.

At least 11 people are in the hospital after the incident took place at the store in Traverse City on Saturday, July 26, the Grand Traverse Sheriff’s Office (GTSO) said in a statement shared on social media.

The suspect, who has only been identified by police as a 42-year-old man, was taken into custody not long after the stabbings began. Authorities said a deputy “was on scene within minutes.”

According to the GTSO, the alleged perpetrator “used a folding knife” to attack the numerous victims. Authorities believe he was “acting alone.”

“There is no information indicating there were additional suspects,” Sheriff Michael Shea said at a news conference, per CNN. “It appears that these were all random acts.”

All of the victims are being treated at the Munson Medical Center. Individuals near or within the Walmart store “assisted in the apprehension and treatment of victims,” according to police.

Munson Healthcare said in a Facebook post that five of the victims are in serious condition, and the other six are in critical condition. Shea said during the press conference that six of the victims are male and five are female.

In a statement to PEOPLE, a Walmart spokesperson said, “Violence like this is unacceptable. Our thoughts are with those who were injured, and we’re thankful for the swift action of first responders. We’ll continue working closely with law enforcement during their investigation.”

The GTSO also expressed sympathy, stating, “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and their families.”

The GTSO did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment on July 26.
