At least three people were killed and several others were injured after a shooter opened fire at an In-N-Out in Idaho.

According to police in Twin Falls, located about 50 miles north of the Nevada border, authorities were called to the restaurant after receiving reports of shots fired at around 2:30 p.m. local time on Saturday, Aug. 1, per KTVB, NBC News and CNN.

At least three people died in the shooting, Twin Falls public information coordinator Josh Palmer told NBC News.

Twin Falls County Commissioner Brent Reinke told the Associated Press that Sheriff Jack Johnson said five people were hurt.

Twin Falls Police Chief Matthew Hicks said a suspected shooter has died, adding that the exact number of fatalities had not been confirmed.

“We believe the threat to the community is over,” Hicks said during a news conference. “The suspected shooter in this incident is deceased.”

“We are working to try to ascertain his identity and the motivations behind that,” he added, per CNN.

Video footage of the incident taken by a driver from across the street and obtained by AP shows a shooter, who appeared to be dressed in black, walking up to a white car outside the restaurant carrying a long rifle. He opened the car’s trunk and reached inside before the person filming fled the scene.

The Twin Falls Police Department initially urged residents to avoid the area in a post shared on social media, saying nearby roads were closed.

A shelter-in-place order for the area was later lifted, and roads were slowly reopening as the shooting investigation continued, the outlets reported.

Idaho Gov. Brad Little said in a statement that he was “keeping the Twin Falls community in [his] prayers as law enforcement and first responders respond to an active shooter situation near In-N-Out.”

The FBI said it was sending agents to assist with the investigation, USA Today reported, but officials said the case is still being overseen by local law enforcement.

The restaurant is located in a large shopping complex with multiple major retailers, a movie theater and a mall. Hicks said hundreds of potential witnesses who were at the scene are expected to be interviewed.

“Today has been a very hard day here in Twin Falls,” the police chief said.

The Twin Falls In-N-Out location is the fourth to open in Idaho. It opened on July 24, 2026, according to the California-based chain restaurant.

“We are heartbroken,” In-N-Out Chief Operating Officer Denny Warnick told NBC News in a statement about the fatal shooting incident. “Our prayers go out to our Customers, our Associates, and all of their families. We are working with the Twin Falls Police Department to assist in the ongoing investigation.”

PEOPLE has reached out to the Twin Falls Police Department for more information.
