Athena Grant and Bobby Nash’s ‘9-1-1-‘ Romance Timeline: A Look Back at Their Relationship

Athena Grant and Bobby Nash captivated audiences on 9-1-1 by kicking butt as a police officer and a firefighter, respectively, but their second chance romance is what made them iconic amongst fans.

9-1-1 premiered in 2018, introducing viewers to LAPD officer Athena (Angela Bassett) and fire captain Bobby (Peter Krause), whose worlds collided regularly as first responders. It wasn’t until halfway through season 1 that the pair became romantic, and they never looked back.

Athena and Bobby not only protected their teams and the people of Los Angeles, but they were always there to save each other from danger. However, tragedy struck during season 8 when Bobby was injected with a deadly virus that nearly killed firefighter Chimney (Kenneth Choi).

Athena once again saved the day by procuring the vaccine for the virus, but there was only one dose. Bobby waited until Chimney was saved to tell his wife he was dying. Athena stayed by his side until the very end causing fans to cry and mourn with her.

Their 1st Date

After a harrowing call during season 1, episode 10, Athena invites Bobby to church to help him process the trauma they both witnessed. They later go to dinner together, marking their first date.

Going Public

Bobby and Athena keep their romance under wraps until season 2, episode 1, when paramedic Hen (Aisha Hinds) notices Bobby acting uncharacteristically happy. When Bobby asks Athena on a real date and to make their relationship known, she hesitates. Athena eventually changes her mind and kisses Bobby at Firehouse 118, so everyone knows he’s her man.

Meeting Her Kids

Prior to dating Bobby, Athena was married to Michael (Rockmond Dunbar) with whom she shares two children, May (Corinne Massiah) and Harry (played by Marcanthonee Reis until 2022 and then Elijah M. Cooper). Michael ended their marriage after coming out as gay.

During season 2, episode 3, Bobby meets the whole crew following an earthquake scare. Michael invites Bobby in to join them all for dinner.

Bobby’s death on 9-1-1 came out of nowhere — but why was the decision to kill off Peter Krause‘s character so controversial? 9-1-1, which premiered in 2018, introduced Us to the professional and personal lives of Los Angeles first responders. Krause was one of the major players in the role of Bobby, a.k.a. the LAFD […]

Accidental LSD Trip

Throughout the series, Bobby is a recovering alcoholic and on a sober journey. His sobriety is compromised during season 2, episode 6, when a tray of brownies laced with LSD shows up at the firehouse. While on the drugs, Bobby starts to hallucinate that his late daughter Brook is there on the roof with him and wants her to float away with him.

Athena comes to the firehouse just in time to talk Bobby off the ledge, literally, and help him get back to his sober self. (Bobby’s daughter, son and wife all died in a fire he accidentally started while drunk in their apartment building back in Minnesota years prior.)

During the same episode, Athena’s daughter, May, goes to homecoming. While taking photos with her family at their house, May asks Bobby to join, warming his heart and confirming he is part of their family.

Engaged!

“I get tired of having to say goodnight to you at the door,” Athena tells Bobby during season 2, episode 10. “Tired of sleeping alone in a bed made for two. I want you in my life. I know the idea of another family, instant family, probably rings a lot of bells for you after what happened.”

Later in the episode, Bobby reveals he feels the same way, gets down on one knee and proposes. “I don’t want to take the next step. I want to take every step, with you, for the rest of your lives. Marry me, Athena,” he says.

Making It Official

The couple tie the knot during season 2, episode 18, in a sweet and simple courthouse wedding.

Athena’s Attack

During season 3, episode 17, Bobby listens on the radio as Athena gets attacked by a serial killer she’s been hunting at a storage facility. When the 118 arrives on scene, Bobby runs through the facility and finds Athena badly injured and takes her to the hospital.

A Bump in the Road

Athena gets into a fight with Bobby during season 4, episode 13, after she learns that he’s been sponsoring a woman who caused a car pile up while driving drunk. When confronted, Bobby calls out Athena for not telling him she was considering retiring.

“Maybe you wouldn’t feel like an outsider if you talked to me instead of playing this tit-for-tat game. Marriage isn’t supposed to work like that,” Athena quips. Bobby responds, “Who says this marriage is working?”

His Hero

During a two-part episode, the LAPD and LAFD are on alert for a sniper who is attacking firefighters. Bobby gets trapped with the offender during season 4, episode 14, leading Athena to suit up as a firefighter to save him from a burning building.

“You went into a burning building. I didn’t imagine that part, right? You actually worked through fire,” Bobby sweetly asks once he’s safe at the hospital. Athena responds, “Well, you were inside. I wasn’t going to let a little fire stop me. I needed to get my partner back.”

Honeymoon Gone Wrong

Years after their wedding, Bobby and Athena finally embark on a honeymoon cruise to start season 7. However, things take a dark turn when the ship is hijacked and later starts to sink. As the vessel is filling with water, the couple prepares for the end.

“You wouldn’t even be here if it weren’t for me. You didn’t want to come on this damn cruise. I made you,” Bobby says during season 7, episode 2. “What the hell was I thinking, deserve a second chance like this?” He claims he doesn’t “deserve” Athena as his wife.

Bobby is heartbroken that he “couldn’t save my first family, and I can’t save you either,” but Athena tells him that’s not the case.

“You’re not the only one getting a second chance here, and you didn’t make me do anything. I’m here because I want to be. with you,” she explains. “And yes, I was afraid. I was afraid that I wouldn’t know how to be with you without all the noise, and when we were really truly alone, I would have nothing to say, but now I find that I have lots to say, but not enough time. I love you, husband.”

Bobby replies, “I love you. I love you, my wife. I love you.” Despite feeling like it’s the end, Bobby and Athena both survive.

Rising from the Ashes

During season 7, episode 9, Bobby and Athena’s house gets lit on fire. Bobby wakes up and grabs his unconscious wife and carries her outside to safety. He performs CPR but then collapses from a heart attack. Bobby eventually wakes up in the hospital and the pair decide to start fresh and build their dream home on the now-vacant lot.

Meeting His Mother

Athena learns during season 8, episode 11, that Bobby’s mother is alive after thinking she was deceased because he never talks about her. Athena hits it off with Ann (Lesley Ann Warren), who is an over-the-top preacher. Bobby, however, butts heads with his mother whom he calls a con artist. Despite their issues, he saves his mom’s life and they end on good terms.

‘Til Death Do They Part

During season 8, episode 15, Bobby and his team get trapped inside a lab with an infectious disease. Because Chimney’s face mask comes off during an explosion, he is exposed to the disease and has just hours to live.

Athena and Buck (Oliver Stark), who manages to make it out before his team gets trapped, try to locate the woman who has the only vaccine. They eventually retrieve the vile and administer it to Chimney before he dies.

However, when Bobby is set to walk out of the lab, he shuts the door and tells Buck to get Athena. Bobby reveals that his oxygen tube was cut hours ago and therefore he is also infected.

“This isn’t how I wanted to leave you,” Bobby tells Athena, revealing, “If I could choose, I would stay with you always.” He adds that Los Angeles was supposed to be his “penance” not his “home” until he met Athena. She stays by his side until he dies.
