Aubrey O’Day will never forget appearing on Celebrity Apprentice — because of Debbie Gibson’s behind-the-scenes behavior.
“This is no shade to her because I love her like a sister, [but] Debbie Gibson would sing all the time,” O’Day, 41, said on the Wednesday, April 2, episode of the “MisSpelling” podcast. “We’ve already gotten past this part of our friendship, but she would annoy me so deeply, and it had nothing to do with her.”
According to the Danity Kane alum, Gibson, now 54, “annoyed me so deeply” during the reality TV show.
O’Day and Gibson both appeared on season 5 of Celebrity Apprentice in 2012, vying for a chance to become now-president Donald Trump’s protégé. O’Day finished in third place, while Gibson ended the series in 11th position.
“When we would drive to set every morning, she would just sing, sing, sing, sing, sing every which way. Every type of artist,” O’Day explained to podcast host Tori Spelling. “She would just be belting it out early in the morning, and I would just be sitting there. She would grind my nerves so bad.”
She added, “I would literally be, like, ‘Even if you didn’t buy tickets, you’re getting no f***ing show from Debbie Gibson, and even if you didn’t want to go, you’re getting it.’ That was the famous line I said on the show.”
Over time, O’Day realized why Gibson was always singing on the set.
“It’s not that she was singing things out of her ability, it’s that she just had grown up in a time in the music industry where people just loved to see Debbie Gibson do anything,” O’Day explained, noting she was taught never to cover other artists who could outperform her. “She was so iconic and the second she opened her mouth, they just loved her.”
O’Day also believes that Gibson likely didn’t know she was rubbing anyone the wrong way.
“She’s genuine as f*** [and] she’s my sister for life,” O’Day said. “We’ve laughed about this, but she just loved singing. She would do it all the time [and] didn’t care if it was off-key, didn’t care if she was doing something.”
Gibson has previously been candid about her stint on Celebrity Apprentice.
“I was really proud of how I handled myself on the show,” she told CBS News in April 2012 after her elimination. “This was once-in-a-lifetime, and I’m so glad I challenged myself in this way.”
