Aubrey Plaza Makes First Red Carpet Appearance Since Husband’s Death at Cannes Film Festival

Aubrey Plaza is stepping out for the Cannes Film Festival.

The actress, 40, walked the red carpet for the premiere of her upcoming film Honey Don’t! on Friday, May 23, posing with her costars Margaret Qualley and Charlie Day, as well as filmmakers Ethan Coen and Tricia Cooke.

For the occasion, Plaza dazzled in a full-length, nude, sleeveless dress embellished with gems, with the head-turning sheer ensemble revealing a matching corset underneath. While she kept her glam subtle with natural makeup, she completed her look with dangling diamond earrings.

Plaza’s moment on the red carpet marks her first appearance since the death of her husband, writer and director Jeff Baena. Baena died in January.

An assistant found Baena’s body at a Los Angeles-area home around 10:30 a.m. local time on Jan. 3, TMZ reported at the time. He was pronounced dead at the scene. According to the Los Angeles Medical Examiner, the manner of death was ruled a suicide.

The Parks and Recreation alum broke her silence on the loss on Jan. 6.

“This is an unimaginable tragedy. We are deeply grateful to everyone who has offered support,” she said in a statement to PEOPLE at the time. “Please respect our privacy during this time.”

Plaza made her first public appearance six weeks later for the 50th anniversary celebration of Saturday Night Live on Feb. 16, where she paid tribute to Baena with a tie-dye T-shirt.

During a December 2021 appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show, Plaza revealed why the design was significant to their relationship, explaining, “Jeff got really into tie-dyeing during the quarantine. So, I decided that Jeff and I were going to wear tie-dye pajamas that he had made for us.”

The pair began dating in 2011, and remained private about their relationship. Fans learned they tied the knot in May 2021, when Plaza called Baena her “darling husband” in an Instagram post.

A rep later confirmed to PEOPLE that the couple had tied the knot.

Honey Don’t! tells the story of a small-town investigator who seeks answers on a series of mysterious deaths linked to a church. It’s set to be released in theaters on Aug. 22.
