- The six-time Tony winner makes history as the first Black actress to play Mama Rose on Broadway
- Directed by George C. Wolfe, Gypsy up for 5 Tony Awards and is now open at the Majestic Theatre
The Audra McDonald-led revival of Gypsy remains one of the hottest tickets on Broadway — and judging from the production’s new music video for “Some People,” it’s no wonder why.
PEOPLE has the exclusive premiere of the clip, which shows off the six-time Tony Award winner’s fresh and ferocious take on the iconic song by Jule Styne and Stephen Sondheim.
With footage spliced from the recording studio and from the staging itself, the video captures every angle of McDonald’s powerhouse performance as Mama Rose, the tenacious stage mother who will do anything to see her daughter become a showbiz star.

The part, based on the mother of legendary burlesque entertainer Gypsy Rose Lee, was created by Ethel Merman in Jerome Robbins’ original 1959 production. Countless actresses have stepped into her shoes since, including Tyne Daly, Angela Lansbury, Bernadette Peters, Patti LuPone, Imelda Staunton, Rosalind Russell and Bette Midler.
But McDonald’s casting made history, as the first Black actress to take on the role on Broadway. The 54-year-old’s performance earned her a 2025 Tony nomination for Best Actress in a Musical, putting her into the record books as the most recognized performer in the theater awards’ history, with 11 nods (she has the most acting wins, too).
Gypsy is up for a total of five Tonys, including Best Revival of a Musical, Best Choreography (Camille A. Brown) and featured actor/actress nominations for Danny Burstein and Joy Woods.
