Becca Tilley and Hayley Kiyoko Share Their Magical Proposal Story and Unexpected Nudist Beach Surprise

Becca Tilley and Hayley Kiyoko are spilling all the details of their “magical” proposal on a nudist beach.

The couple of seven years announced their engagement via a joint post on Instagram on Thursday, July 10, with Kiyoko writing, “My dream girl said yes to forever…” alongside several photos from the proposal. During their appearance on an episode of iHeartRadio’s Scrubbing In with Becca Tilley & Tanya Rad podcast that day, Tilley and Kiyoko revealed that their engagement took place in Majorca, Spain, “a week” earlier.

“I always thought I would be the first to propose, so I went on the trip, I had several friends being like, ‘Are y’all getting engaged? Are you proposing?’ ” Tilley, 36, recalled. “I was like, ‘No, you guys. It’s just a vacation. We go on trips all the time, and I don’t even have a ring or anything, so we’re not getting engaged.’ So, when I tell you I had absolutely no clue, it wasn’t even a thought in my mind going into the trip. I mean, I was clueless.”

Kiyoko, 34, admitted that it was tough to surprise The Bachelor alum.

“Just trying to surprise Becca is just, like, beyond,” Kiyoko said. “It’s really hard to surprise her because she’s super intuitive, a smart cookie.”

“Giving her the surprise was the most important thing to me,” she added.

Wanting every detail to be perfect, Kiyoko made sure they each packed cute outfits and got their nails done beforehand.

It was “stressful” for the singer-songwriter to secretly put the elongated cushion-cut diamond ring she designed with Ring Concierge for Tilley in her carry-on luggage. Because the ring box was “huge” and she was worried about being flagged in airport security, Kiyoko hid it in a Tate’s Bake Shop bag, removing the cookies first. At home, the engagement ring was stored in Kiyoko’s hiking bag, somewhere she knew Tilley would never look.

The Lemonade Mouth star was also worried about the weather and crowds.

“Her dream is to go to Mallorca during high season with beautiful weather, but with that comes lots of people,” Kiyoko said. “So my mission is to find turquoise water, a beach with no one around, and I have to somehow figure this out.”

Her tour photographer, Yik Keat, also had to fly out for the proposal. He scouted a beach for the “perfect” location, and placed a rock and tissue on the ground for Kiyoko to know the exact spot to pop the question.

It wasn’t until the big moment that Kiyoko discovered that it was a “nudist” beach, resulting in “a sea of penises” in the background of the proposal. “It was just so funny that these two women are getting engaged and if you panned the camera to the right there’s just penises all over … That was so hilarious,” Tilley said, with Kiyoko noting that they later “joined” and “took our tops [off].”

The day of the proposal, the couple drove about an hour to the beach. There, Kiyoko led Tilley to the scouted spot.

“She makes an abrupt stop and start setting up the tripod. I’m like, okay, I guess this is where we’re taking our pictures. I’m like watching her, she comes up. I had like a cute little sun bucket hat on and sunglasses, and she just takes the hat off of me, takes my sunglasses,” Tilley remembered. “I’m like, ‘Why are you doing [this]?’ She’s not saying anything.”

“My legs are like shaking, I look like I’m gonna throw up,” Kiyoko noted.

Kiyoko then took the ring out of her purse and began breaking down in tears.

“She’s already crying, and I’m so overwhelmed because it was so unexpected,” Tilley said. “I was so overwhelmed and trying to be present. She said amazing things to me … about, like, ‘I’ll keep you safe and I’ll be your safe [place],’ just beautiful things that have always made me feel, like, she was my person. Then, she got down on a knee and asked me to marry her, and I said ‘yes.’ ”

The ring “fit perfect.”

“All of a sudden, it was like sinking and what just happened and it was magical,” Tilley said. “And then we jumped into the crystal clear blue water and we swam.”

Tilley and Kiyoko started dating in 2018, and publicly confirmed their romance in 2022.

Back in 2023, Kiyoko opened up to PEOPLE about what she loves most about her relationship with Tilley.

“I love that we continue to grow with one another and she is such a supportive partner, and we get to laugh through life together. We have so much fun together,” she said. “We could be doing anything and having the best time, even if things aren’t going great or we’re going through highs or lows and the whirls, we’re able to just be there with one another.”

She continued, “I’m so grateful for her love and she’s my soulmate. It’s been really great to get to share our love with everyone. She’s the best.”
