Becky G Calls ‘Releasing Toxic People’ Her ‘Biggest Achievement’: ‘I’m Really Owning Rebecca’ (Exclusive)

As she enters a new year and phase of her career, Becky G isn’t looking back.

The singer, who first shot into the spotlight with the multi-platinum track “Shower” in 2014, hasn’t let up on the gas. In 2024 alone, she scored her first-ever Latin Grammy Award for producing, released her fourth album Encuentros and hit the road for her second headlining tour — and still had time to lend a few verses to a track on Tyla’s sexy self-titled album and guest judge on an episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race

“I’ve been doing this since I was very, very young, and I’m very work mode — very beast mode when it comes to what I do and my career,” admits the star, 27, in an exclusive interview with PEOPLE ahead of the release of her Super Bowl ad with Mountain Dew. “I deserve to have a little bit of fun.”

Amid her ascent to stardom, she’s had to navigate through some thorny issues in her personal life — made more complicated when they have spilled into the public eye.

In 2023, not long before Becky was set to perform on Coachella’s main stage, her engagement to the FC Dallas payer Sebastian Lletget was embroiled in rumors of infidelity, prompting Lletget to share a lengthy statement on Instagram about his “10-minute lapse in judgment,” adding that he was willing to do “whatever it takes to earn back” her trust.

But Becky gave her fans a stellar performance in the desert — with the assist of Peso Pluma, who made a surprise on-stage appearance. And she followed up the festival with more career highs: her first headlining tour and a new album, which made the year-end rankings of several publications.

After a decade of the grind, Becky tells PEOPLE, she’s learning what she needs to leave behind. It’s no coincidence that “Otro Capítulo” (“Next Chapter”) was the title for one of her 2024 singles — as well as the name for her North American tour last fall.

“I’ve let go and made a lot of space. I feel like I was very attached to old-self things and being on this journey has allowed me to really make peace and say thank you and then release,” says the performer of her last two albums, which were a tribute to her grandparents, who immigrated to the United States from Mexico.

In the process of letting go, Becky continues, she says that releasing toxicity has been her “biggest achievement” — both the “toxic versions” of herself and the “toxic people” around her that “don’t really want me to see me be happy and don’t really want to see me do me.”

“Doing me means doing it from my heart, my mind, in my process, at my time,” she says. “I feel like I’m really owning Rebecca, and it’s something that I feel has really translated in my artistry.”

She concludes: “I think that’s kind of what I hope for anybody that I love and care for — that they do it because it’s the journey that teaches us, not necessarily the destinations. Everybody just wants to get to the top and has their own idea of what success looks like, but mine is mine, and I love mine.”
