Bella Hadid Puts a New Spin on Iconic Dior Dress Milla Jovovich Wore to Cannes in 1997

NEED TO KNOW

  • Bella Hadid wore a vintage Christian Dior dress to her Orebella fragrance launch party in London
  • The dress hails from the label’s 1997 fall collection
  • Milla Jovovich wore the dress fresh off the runway to Cannes Film Festival that same year

Bella Hadid stepped out in a piece of fashion history today.

Although she’s not in Cannes anymore, the supermodel wore a glimmering throwback to the 1997 installment of the Cannes Film Festival festival while in London for her Orebella fragrance launch party.

Hadid, 28, sparkled in a silver V-neck metallic wrap dress from John Galliano’s 1997 fall collection that supermodel and Resident Evil actress Milla Jovovich wore that year at Cannes.

Hadid paired the iconic dress — embellished with metallic ruffles and rosette decals — with silver Jimmy Choo pointed pumps. She finished the look with a diamond tennis necklace, rings, and heart-shaped earrings.

Beauty-wise, Hadid tied her hair back in a slick ballet bun, adding a few white rosettes, while completing the ensemble with an ever-so-slightly rosy makeup look.

Nearly 30 years ago, Jovovich paired the shimmering dress with the same gladiator-style heel that supermodel Hedvig Marie Maigre wore during its fashion week debut. The Fifth Element star walked the red carpet in the Dior dress while attending the premiere of the Luc Besson-directed sci-fi action film.

This year at the Cannes Film Festival, Hadid wore a sleek back Saint Laurent gown that included a hip-high slit and side cutouts showing some skin. Hadid paired the dress with beautiful emerald earrings, a heart-shaped diamond ring, and Saint Laurent sandals embellished with rhinestones.

Hadid’s gown appeared to serve as a wink at the festival’s announcement of the new dress code, in which “nudity is prohibited on the red carpet, as well as in any other area of the festival” due to “decency reasons.” In addition to that, “voluminous outfits, in particular those with a large train, that hinder the proper flow of traffic of guests and complicate seating in the theater are not permitted.”
