When it comes to the upcoming birth of his first child, Ben Higgins already knows how he’s going to react when wife Jessica Clarke goes into labor.
“I have been very calm for nine months with all the life changes. I’ve been, kind of, in ‘try to get things done’ mode,” Higgins, 35, shared on the Friday, February 7, episode of his and Ashley Iaconetti’s “Almost Famous” podcast. “I told [my wife] yesterday, I think as soon as we step into the hospital that anything that I’ve pushed back because it just doesn’t seem appropriate right now is going to come out and I’m going to be pretty on edge.”
Higgins noted that he “could see myself passing out” during his wife’s labor, even though he plans to “be up top” during the actual delivery. “That’s maybe where I’ll start to get queasy,” he said.
Despite his worries about the birthing process, Higgins said one he and Clarke, 29, decided is that he will cut their baby daughter’s umbilical cord. “My dad did it for me and, I don’t know, it’s something I remember him telling me. And I’m like, ‘That’s pretty cool,’” he shared. “I don’t necessarily want to. There isn’t this, like, ‘Oh, I cannot wait to be the one to cut that.’ I think it’s going to be tough, mentally.”

Courtesy of Jessica Clarke Higgins/Instagram Ben Higgins shared an update on how his wife, Jess Clarke, is doing “midway through” her pregnancy with their first baby. “Jess is fantastic … she has four months left,” Higgins, 35, gushed during the Thursday, October 3, episode of his “The Ben & Ashley I Almost Famous” podcast. “We […]
Iaconetti’s husband, Jared Haibon, assured Higgins that cutting the umbilical cord isn’t as stressful as it seems. “[The doctors] practically grab your hand, and it’s just like, ‘Here, Dad. Go. Snip, OK, done,’” Haibon — who shares sons Dawson, 3, and Hayden, 6 months, with Iaconetti — quipped. “It’s just like, ‘Oh, wow. That was it. OK, we’re done.’”
Higgins and Clarke began dating in 2018, two years after he starred on season 20 of The Bachelor and one year after he and he and ex Lauren Bushnell called it quits. Higgins popped the question in March 2020 and the two tied the knot one year later.
The couple announced they were expecting their first child, a baby girl, via Instagram in August 2024. “The next chapter of our love story! Baby girl coming in February ❤️,” Clarke captioned a joint post featuring clips of their biggest relationship moments, as well as footage of them breaking the pregnancy news to loved ones.
On Friday’s podcast, Higgins admitted that the idea of becoming a dad still feels “weird” to him. “I don’t feel still at 35 like I should be having a child,” he confessed. “That’s still a weird feeling of we’re days away, hours away, moments away, maybe, from having a baby in this house that now I’m responsible for.”
Luckily, Higgins said he and Clarke’s parents have been a “good support system” and that they have been working on “baby training” with their dog, Waylon.
Earlier in the podcast, Clarke revealed that she has “had dreams” about meeting the pair’s daughter, stating, “I’ve literally had dreams about, like, giving birth and holding her. And then I wake up and she’s not there and it’s, like, the saddest thing ever. Like, I’m so excited to meet her.”
She continued: “Now that I know how soon we are having her, I have this mental block of actually imagining — I’m sure most women have this, but I can’t imagine pushing a baby out of my body. Like, it’s a complete block.”
