Bette Midler reunited with her Beaches costar Barbara Hershey.
Midler, 80, shared a selfie alongside Hershey, 78, in an Instagram post on Thursday, Feb. 26. "It’s a BEACHES reunion! Here I am with the great Barbara Hershey! We go back a-ways!!!" she captioned the post. The pair costarred in the film in 1988, which was adapted from the 1985 New York Times-bestselling novel of the same name by Iris Rainer Dart.
Beaches follows the evolving friendship between C.C. Bloom (Midler) and Hillary Whitney (Hershey), who first meet in the 1950s on the New Jersey shore and keep in touch as the former becomes a famous singer and actress while the latter becomes a human rights lawyer. The film charted new territory for in-depth stories of female friendship on screen in the 1980s, depicting the main characters struggling to reconcile their personal relationships with their high ambitions and clashing personalities.
"It's in the midst of time, but I remember it being an incredibly happy set," Midler told PEOPLE of filming Beaches, directed by Garry Marshall, in 2024.
"He had such a talent for pulling together, and he had all these cameos," Midler said of Marshall's directing on the film. "He had all his actor improv friends come and do cameos in these movies, in his movies. They were absolutely worth the price of admission."
The heartfelt film has been adapted for the stage, and Broadway previews begin March 27, with an official opening night set for April 22. The production will run through Sept. 6, ahead of a multi-city national tour.
