Billie Lourd may have gotten her comedic chops from her late grandmother, Debbie Reynolds, and her mom, Carrie Fisher, but she says she is also “definitely different” from the pair.
“I’d say definitely the comedy is in the genetics. They were better at it than me. I can do a fair bit of tap dancing, not as good as … young Debbie Reynolds, but that’s also in the genes, although my mom kind of sucked at tap dancing,” Lourd, 32, told People in an interview published on Sunday, March 30.
“I’m a very distinct personality, definitely different from both of them,” she added. “Well, it’s something you learn through generations. I think I’ve learned to balance my life and my work in a different way than they were able to do, and that was also a product of the times.”
As for her own children Kingston, 4, and Jackson, 2, Lourd isn’t putting any pressure on them to go into the entertainment industry. “But I don’t want to put pressure on them to do anything [in show business]. But yeah, my kids are hysterical and cool and really good dancers and just awesome,” she explained. “We’ve all wanted someone to be a doctor in this family. Let’s hope we get a doctor out of them. Whatever they want to do, I’ll support.”
On Wednesday, March 26, Lourd exclusively told Us Weekly that she and husband Austin Rydell are “in the trenches together with our kids.”
She added, “We always just make sure to remember that we’re each other’s best friend.” The pair have been together off and on since 2016 and got engaged in 2020 before marrying in March 2022, a year after Kingston was born. Jackson joined the family in December 2022.
“I’m obsessed with my kids,” Lourd also told Us. “It’s such a gift. I’ve wanted to be a mom my whole life and getting to do it is dreamier than any dream I could have ever dreamed. Absolutely beautiful. It’s awesome.”
Lourd also explained how she and Rydell balance their personal and professional lives.

“[Austen is] here with me right now, and he usually will take a photo with me,” Billie gushed. “He’s a producer [and] when he’s working, we bring our kids everywhere we go. I’ll go on set with him and then I’ll be, like, mom [and] wife at home. And then, when I’m working, he’s dad, husband at home. He’s the greatest human in the world and supports me in everything I do — and I support him in everything he does. We are each other’s cheerleaders. I’m kind of obsessed with him.”
