Blake Shelton reacted to the chatter from fans about his and Gwen Stefani recent performance at 2025 American Music Awards.
“Just now seeing these stories about Gwen and I pretaping our performances for the AMA’s,” Shelton, 48, wrote on X on Tuesday, May 27. “We came and performed when the show asked us to … Really nothing else to say.”
During the Monday, May 26, televised event, Shelton sang his song “Stay Country or Die Tryin” while Stefani, 55, sang a medley of songs from her hit album Love. Angel. Music. Baby. and her new song “Swallow My Tears.” Before Stefani performed, Shelton gave his wife a sweet introduction.
“Tonight, she’s celebrating the 20th anniversary of that AMA win by performing two of her biggest hits and her newest hit. Let’s hear it for my one and only, the one and only Gwen Stefani.”
While viewers at home enjoyed seeing Stefani and Shelton perform on screen, the live audience had a different reaction. Fans took to social media at the time of the awards show, which took place on Monday, May 26, at the Fontainebleau Las Vegas.
“When Blake Shelton is ‘performing’ at the AMA Awards but there is no sign of Blake Shelton in sight 🫠,” a user wrote via TikTok.
Another fan also called out Stefani for doing the same thing.
“Gwen Stefani Live at the AMAs… the live view… “We’ve been lied to,” a second user wrote in a TikTok clip, “LIKE WHATTT… why would they say performing live when they aren’t even here?? 😭.”
While fans who were in attendance at the AMAs in person were disappointed by Stefani and Shelton’s not appearing IRL, the “God’s Country’ singer did do something special for his fans. A source told Us Weekly that Shelton held a performance for fans at his bar Ole Red after doing the pretape on Saturday, May 24.
Stefani, meanwhile, “had a beautiful elaborate set” for her AMA show, a separate source told Us, clarifying that the performance “was shot at the venue in front of a live audience.”
Stefani and Shelton were announced as performers alongside host Jennifer Lopez, Janet Jackson and Rod Stewart. Jackson and Stewart were also awarded with the ICON Award and Lifetime Achievement Award, respectively. Gloria Estefan, Benson Boone, Lainey Wilson, Reneé Rapp, Becky G, Manuel Turizo and Alex Warren also took the stage. Shelton and Stefani were seemingly the only musical acts to not perform live at the venue.
Ahead of the AMAs, Stefani shared a clip of her rehearsing for the awards show.
“Rehearsals 🎤 💓 gx #AMAs @amas @cbstv @paramoutplus,” Stefani captioned an Instagram Reel set to her song “Wind It Up.”
