The body of a 10-year-old girl was located two days after she went missing.
The child’s remains were located under the Market Street Bridge in the Passaic River in Passaic, N.J., on Friday, July 31, Mayor Hector Lora said, NorthJersey.com reported. The search teams from across counties, the city and the state used helicopters, boats, sonar, drones and cadaver dogs to search a nine-mile stretch of the river.
The child entered the water off a boat ramp near Dundee Island Park with a 10-year-old boy and his 11-year-old sister on Wednesday, July 29, around 6:21 p.m.
Around 10 p.m. on Wednesday, the 10-year-old boy who drowned was recovered from the river, not far from where the children entered the water. He was a sibling of the 11-year-old girl. The 10-year-old girl was their friend.
An undercurrent took hold of the children, and only the 11-year-old girl was able to escape the water, The New York Times reported. The boy pushed her back to the shoreline, and “may have unintentionally saved her life,” Lora said, per the outlet.
The two 10-year-olds could not escape, and a man attempted to save the two children but was not able to reach them. The boy drowned. His body was recovered around 50 feet away from the boat ramp, around 10 p.m. on Wednesday, July 29. A memorial was created in honor of the boy on Wall Street Bridge in Passaic.
