Booty Cleavage Is Back! Tracing the Trend From Heidi Klum to Zoe Kravitz

Heidi Klum walked — literally — so Zoë Kravitz could run.

Nearly two decades ago, the former Victoria’s Secret Angel strutted down the lingerie-laden runway at the 2007 VS fashion show in no shortage of skivvies and larger-than-life wings, but after at least three wardrobe changes, she reappeared on the catwalk in a look that all but stole the show.

Giving dazzling new meaning to the phrase, “business in the front, party in the back,” Klum, now 51, donned a long-sleeved micro minidress covered in multicolored sequins that, at first glance, looked far more covered-up than her previous turns at the show. (Lest you forget, she also wore the $12.5 million-worth Very Sexy Fantasy Bra in 2001 when it first made its runway debut.)

Then, Klum spun around only to reveal a dangerously low open back that revealed the top of her preternaturally pert butt crack. She paired the look with peep-toe metallic pumps for an extra touch of shine, but there was no shortage of star power on the runway thanks to her then-husband, Seal, whom she joined on stage in said dress to sing a duet.

But Klum’s risqué outfit was so revealing that it took years before other daring celebrities followed in her gold-heeled footsteps — which, in reality, isn’t a look made for walking, sitting or even air kissing without the risk of a wardrobe malfunction.

Fast-forward to 2014, Rihanna took the trend for a spin while hosting her Met Gala after-party at the Up & Down Club in New York City on the first Monday in May. RiRi, 37, turned heads in the high-necked, high-shine gown with a similarly low back by John Galliano for Maison Margiela.

At the time, Grazia Daily’s Katherine Ormerod coined it the “bumster” dress, though others have since bared more than their crack at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Annual Costume Gala.

In 2017, Kendall Jenner and Bella Hadid graced the staircase with their derrière exposed mere moments apart – with Jenner, 29, in a see-through La Perla look made from a single piece of string and Hadid, 28, in a crystallized Alexander Wang catsuit that left (very) little to the imagination.

Kravitz, 36, appears to be the most consistently dedicated to the trend. Having mastered the bejeweled bralette (in an 18-karat gold Tiffany & Co. bra at the 2019 Vanity Fair Oscars after-party), she took it even further at the 2021 Met Gala in a crystal mesh underwear set with a shimmering dress overlay by Saint Laurent Creative Director Anthony Vaccerello.

That night, Kravitz told Vogue of her look: “It’s pretty bold.”

However, the number Kravitz recently wore to the 2025 Vanity Fair Oscars after-party was “bumster” dressing at its finest, and once again, she turned to Vaccerello for his expertise. Indeed, she took home the unofficial award for the cheekiest look of the night in a glamorous black satin and rhinestone-encrusted floor-length gown with a bedazzled peephole at the back.

We’re calling it: butt cleavage is the new side boob for 2025, and we have Klum to thank.
