A 1-year-old boy has died after allegedly choking on a fake nail.
On Saturday, March 21, Aylin Saucedo was changing her son Dante Valentín Bermudes Rumi's diaper when he began to choke on a piece of an acrylic nail, Argentine news outlets Todos Noticias and Telenoche reported.
Saucedo attempted to put her hand in the baby boy's mouth to remove the partially clipped acrylic nail — and that’s when he began to swallow it.
“We were at home and I realized he wasn't breathing,” the manicurist recalled to Todos Noticias. “I ran outside to ask my neighbor for help, but she couldn't. Then my aunt came upstairs and she couldn't either. So I rushed to the hospital.”

The drive to the hospital took around 10 minutes, according to the outlet. Despite life-saving efforts made by medical staff at Grand Bourg Trauma Hospital, Dante did not survive.
“Today you’re no longer here, and all I have left are your toys, your little moles, and all your things without you,” Saucedo wrote in a social media tribute, per The Sun and the Daily Express. “Mom is shattered into a thousand pieces and doesn’t even have the strength to face this pain.”
“I need you with me,” she added. “I miss you, I need to wake up with you, and it breaks my heart to know we won’t have a morning having breakfast together, my love.”
An autopsy report established that Dante’s death was caused by asphyxiation due to airway obstruction, noting that the body showed no signs of violence, Todos Noticias reported. While the San Martín Justice system is investigating the toddler’s death, there are currently no suspects and the prosecutor’s office is working to determine if the incident was a domestic accident.
Following her son's death, Saucedo alleged that Dante’s father blamed her for the incident and attempted to prevent her from attending her son’s funeral.
“They wouldn’t give me any information,” she told the outlet. “They wouldn’t tell me when the wake was being held or where he was being buried. The father paid the funeral home to keep me from participating. He didn’t want me to get any information.”
Despite claiming that she was given conflicting information about viewing times, Saucedo ultimately got to say a final goodbye to her son.
“I was able to see my son for 45 minutes because it was his father’s order,” she said. “He held the wake and buried him afterward.”
