Brad Pitt Returns to Work After His Mom’s Death as He Films Once Upon a Time in Hollywood Sequel

NEED TO KNOW

  • Brad Pitt was photographed on the set of his upcoming sequel to 2019’s Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood on Aug. 19, two weeks after his mom Jane died at 84
  • Pitt has been filming the movie, written by Quentin Tarantino and directed by David Fincher, this summer
  • Pitt’s mother, whose family knew her as Grammy, accompanied Pitt to the Oscars back in 2012

Brad Pitt is getting back to work two weeks after his mom Jane’s death at 84.

The actor, 61, was photographed in costume as his character Cliff Booth on Tuesday, Aug. 19, in Los Angeles as filming continues for the sequel to 2019’s Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood.

Pitt, whose mother Jane died on Aug. 5, is “being his usual professional self despite this personal tragedy,” a source tells PEOPLE.

The star grew up as the oldest of three — his parents Jane and William also had Doug and Julie — in Springfield, Mo., before setting off on his movie career.

“Known affectionately as Grammy, Jane found immense joy in celebrating each grandchild’s uniqueness through one-on-one traditions lovingly known as ‘Your Special Day,’ ” Pitt’s family wrote in an obituary. “These treasured moments remain among the fondest memories for all 14 of her grandchildren.”

While Brad’s parents largely stayed out of the spotlight during his career, Brad went out of his way to shout-out his mom publicly in June while he spoke with the Today show host Savannah Guthrie at a special screening of F1, his latest movie.

“I gotta say hi to my mom because she watches you every morning,” he told Guthrie in a video clip shared by Today. “To Jane Pitt. Love you, Mom.”

Pitt has been filming the sequel to Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood for at least a month in Los Angeles. He was previously photographed on the set and in costume as Cliff Booth, complete with a blond wig and a matching mustache, on July 29.

Pitt was still sporting a long blond wig on the movie’s set Aug. 19, which looks longer and messier than how he appeared opposite Leonardo DiCaprio in Quentin Tarantino’s 2019 film.

David Fincher is directing Pitt in the new movie, titled The Adventures of Cliff Booth, from a script Tarantino, 62, wrote as a spinoff from Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood

The 2019 film, which earned Pitt his Best Supporting Actor Academy Award, followed Booth as a stunt performer for DiCaprio’s Rick Dalton in 1969. It depicts Booth and Dalton’s experiences adjusting to the end of the ’60s in Hollywood and imagines an alternative history in which they inadvertently prevent Sharon Tate’s murder by members of the Manson family.

Multiple outlets first reported on The Adventures of Cliff Booth‘s development in April. The project appears to have come about after Tarantino shelved a potential movie titled The Movie Critic, a 1970s-set screenplay reportedly about a movie reviewer for a pornographic magazine.

Tarantino recently shared during an appearance on The Church of Tarantino podcast that he is not directing The Adventures of Cliff Booth because the script felt like he is “walking down the same ground I’ve already walked,” and wants to find “uncharted territory” for his next film project. The Adventures of Cliff Booth does not yet have a release date.
