Bride Accuses Cousin of ‘Trying to One Up Her’ with Controversial Dress, Starts ‘Screaming Match’ at Wedding

  • A bride started a “screaming match” with her cousin at her wedding for wearing a blue dress
  • “She accused me of trying to one up her in her own wedding and trying to steal the attention,” the bride’s cousin wrote in a post on Reddit
  • The wedding guest left the beach ceremony to “avoid drama” and asked Reddit users if she was in the wrong, to which they argued that the bride was at fault

A bride started a “screaming match” with her cousin over her wedding attire.

The bride’s cousin, who attended the wedding over the weekend as a guest, recalled the heated confrontation in post on Reddit’s “Am I the A——” forum. Because the wedding ceremony took place on a beach, the woman “thought it would be nice” to wear “a sky blue cocktail dress.” The bride, 27, disagreed.

“My cousin got mad,” the Redditor remembered. “She accused me of trying to one up her in her own wedding and trying to steal the attention.”

The wedding guest noted she intentionally didn’t accessorize with jewelry or high heels because she was afraid of the bride thinking she was trying to upstage her, which perhaps suggests that the two women have butted heads over outfits in the past.

Eventually, other guests noticed the argument ramping up and tried to intervene.

“My aunt told her to calm down and said that it’s just a dress and it’s not like I’m wearing a white dress to the wedding,” the bride’s cousin wrote.

Attempts to diffuse the situation failed.

“It became a screaming match and my aunty, uncle and my cousin’s partner had to pull her away because she wouldn’t stop yelling at me,” the Redditor said.

Because the fight was only getting worse, the bride’s cousin decided to leave the wedding and go home to avoid further “drama.”

“My parents and siblings asked why I wasn’t there and I told them what happened,” she wrote. “They were mostly on my side, but they didn’t want to get involved and I can’t blame them. They’re not on my cousin’s side, they just want to know what happened. I also don’t know how the guests reacted.”

She concluded her post by sharing a link to the dress and asking the forum: “Was I TA (The A——) for wearing a sky blue dress to my cousin’s wedding?”

In a comment, she added for context that the bride was wearing “a white lace wedding gown with a white cathedral length lace veil.” Her bridal party “wore cream,” and several guests “wore blue, yellow, pink and orange.”

In the comments section, the majority of Reddit users agreed that the bride’s cousin was not at fault. They guessed that the bride likely felt “competitive” because she is “insecure” about her physical appearance.

“I think the obvious answer is you are attractive and she is not. At least in her own head,” the top comment reads. “You were showing her up by simply showing up 🤷‍♂️.”

“NTA (Not The A——) and I’m going to go out on a limb and assume you’re prettier than your cousin,” another Reddit user wrote. “She’s insecure, probably jealous, and I’d be the bigger person and just say, ‘Sorry I thought it would be appropriate for a beach wedding,’ and then wash my hands of it.”
