Bride Reveals the Shocking Advice Her Aunt Gave Her Before Wedding: ‘Did She Seriously Just Say That?’

NEED TO KNOW

  • A bride revealed in a post on Reddit that her aunt gave her some shocking advice, just weeks before her wedding
  • “I’m still shocked she thought this was the best moment for that kind of unsolicited advice,” she wrote
  • In the comments, readers urged the bride to shrug off her aunt’s pessimistic comments

A bride was happily anticipating her upcoming wedding when her aunt suddenly gave her some “unsolicited” advice that put a damper on her excitement.

She shared the story on Reddit’s “Wedding Drama” forum, beginning by explaining that she and her fiancé are set to tie the knot in a few weeks. The couple hoped for “a chill lead-up” to their nuptials, but instead, “drama has come out of the woodwork.”

“The latest? My aunt decided it was the perfect time to tell me that I shouldn’t even be getting married because, according to her, ‘marriage is just a contract that’ll ruin your life,’ ” the Redditor revealed, noting that this conversation with her aunt took place just two days before her bridal shower.

“She even said, ‘I can’t believe you’re throwing away your life like this. There’s so much more to life than being tied down,’ ” the bride continued. “Like, did she seriously just say that?”

She added: “I’m still shocked she thought this was the best moment for that kind of unsolicited advice.”

The bride said she laughed off her aunt’s comments in the moment — “mainly out of awkwardness” — but she is pretty sure her aunt was “serious” in her intention to deter her from going through with the wedding.

As she concluded her post, the bride told fellow Reddit users, “I just need some backup here. I’m not the only one dealing with [such drama], right?”

In the comments, many people told the bride to shrug off her aunt’s comments.

“Sounds like your aunt is still mad about her divorce,” one person suggested, adding, “Don’t read into her bitterness.”

Someone else agreed, writing, “She’s projecting her feelings onto you. She feels that way personally about marriage and how her life turned out. That’s a ‘her’ problem, not a ‘you’ problem, and you can just ignore her as best you can.”

Another person urged the bride — and anyone else dealing with similarly unsolicited advice from loved ones — to “tell them to keep their opinions to themselves.”

They added, “Either they respect your choice and wishes and keep quiet at the wedding, or they don’t come.”

One reader said they actually agreed with the aunt’s advice — but took issue with the timing of it. “Sounds like something that she should have told you while you were still single,” they wrote.

As for how the bride should move forward, a commenter told her, “People say stupid things all the time and you just have to ignore them. In one ear and out the other. Redirect the conversation.”

The commenter added: “She said something, it was not an appropriate thing to say, let it drop to the floor and move on. The tree that fell in the forest that nobody heard doesn’t make a sound.”
