Bride’s Sister Gives Long Speech at Wedding — but Only Mentions the Groom

NEED TO KNOW

  • A bride’s sister, her maid of honor, gave a long wedding speech — but only mentioned the groom
  • One wedding worker summarized the “sus” speech on Reddit, sharing that it gave the impression that “the bride’s sister wants the groom”
  • Many Reddit users commented that the speech sounded like a love “confession,” and suggested that wedding speeches be vetted beforehand to avoid awkward scenarios

A maid of honor gushed over the groom instead of the bride in her wedding speech.

In a post on Reddit’s “Wedding Shaming” forum, one wedding worker shared how the bride’s maid of honor, her sister, only spoke of the groom in her “really cringe” speech.

“Me and a coworker looked at each other and said, ‘It seems that the bride’s sister wants the groom,’ ” the wedding worker recalled. “I can only hope this obvious affection is one-sided on the sister’s part.”

“I am certain we weren’t the only ones to think the speech was sus,” they added in a comment.

The wedding worker and their colleague speculated that there was romantic interest on the maid of honor’s part because the second she stepped up to the podium and grabbed the microphone, the only words she spoke were about the groom.

“She immediately began to speak of the groom, which didn’t seem so weird at first, until she kept going and kept going,” the Redditor wrote. “At one point [she] described how much he supported her and made her feel loved and how she had realized at a certain point how much she loved him.”

Five minutes later, the maid of honor finally mentioned her sister — but her comment was questionable.

“She said one thing about the bride and it was this: ‘You have always been a source of love in my life, and now…you’ve brought him into my life,’ ” the wedding worker said.

“It gave off main character syndrome,” the individual added.

Several Reddit users commented that the wedding speech sounded more like a love “confession.”

“Oh boy,” one person commented, with another predicting, “There’s going to be problems with this marriage!”

A few people suggested that wedding speeches should be read by an appointed person ahead of time to avoid awkward situations like this because “there’s so many self-centered or clueless people out there.”

“People need to vet these speeches better OR be really discerning about who they let give speeches,” another commenter recommended. “And it’s time to get the DJ/emcee/band leader in on it. And the wedding coordinator needs to be on alert so that s— like this stops after a minute or two.”
