Cardi B’s recent civil assault trial resulted in a series of viral moments. Now, she’s clearing the air on one of them.
On Monday, Sept. 15, the “Up” rapper appeared on The Jennifer Hudson Show and detailed her time in court. When Hudson, 44, asked if she was falling asleep during closing arguments, as seen on videos posted on social media by Court TV, Cardi set the record straight.
“I’m not even going to lie, I was,” Cardi, 32, told the host about nodding off. “I had a long night! I’m in the middle of an album rollout. I was so sleepy, I was trying to fight it but I just couldn’t.”
When Hudson asked how she was feeling after the trial — where she was found not liable for assault and battery against a former security guard on Sept. 2 — Cardi said she was “overwhelmed.”
“I’m in the middle of an album rollout, and I have to go to court,” Cardi, who’s releasing her next studio album Am I the Drama? on Sept. 19, said.
“And then, when I get to court, I realize that it’s going to be on national TV, being televised. It’s like, ‘You’ve got to be kidding me,'” she added. “I missed my kids’ first day of school. But at least it’s positive press.”
One day after the civil assault trial, she began selling limited versions of her upcoming album using viral meme photos of her in court as the artwork called the “Courtroom Edition.”
“I mean look!… BY POPULAR DEMAND, the court room edition of AM I THE DRAMA? is available NOW,” wrote Cardi on social media.
Since then, Cardi has been working hard to promote her album. In a hilarious video on TikTok, the “I Like It” rapper hawked her record on the street for passersby to purchase.
“What up, ya’ll! We outside, we got that exclusive Cardi B new album we selling right now. We got the vinyls, we got the CDs, we got the court edition. $9.99,” she said in the video, with her vinyls and CDs scattered on a large blanket.
In a recent cover story interview with Billboard, Cardi said that while she would love to win a Grammy for the new project, “times have changed.”
“Success for me will be people saying, ‘She put out a great album.’ If [at] 3 a.m. people are talking about the album, that’s going to be success for me because people can’t wait to downplay it,” she said.
Am I the Drama? is set for a Sept. 19 release and will feature the singles “Imaginary Playerz,” “Outside,” “Up” and “WAP.”
