Good luck to anyone who expects Chappell Roan to be anyone but herself.
The “Red Wine Supernova” singer—who has been outspoken about the realities of fame since skyrocketing to fame last year—insisted that she’d be even more celebrated if she didn’t speak her mind so freely.
“I think, actually, I’d be more successful if I was okay wearing a muzzle,” Chappell told The BBC in an interview published Jan. 19. “If I were to override more of my basic instincts, where my heart is going, ‘Stop, stop, stop, you’re not OK,’ I would be bigger.”
The 26-year-old—who canceled several music festival appearances last fall to prioritize her health—added, “I would be way bigger… And I would still be on tour right now.”
Chappell (real name Kayleigh Rose Amstutz) credited her late grandfather Dennis Chappell, who inspired her onstage moniker, with providing her with helpful advice that has informed how she decides whether or not to take on something new.
“There’s something he said that I think about in every move I make with my career: ‘There are always options,'” she recalled. “So when someone says, ‘Do this concert because you’ll never get offered that much money ever again’, it’s like, who cares?”
