Charlize Theron is sticking to the same story she’s told for years: she’s not interested in getting married.
Theron, 49, appeared on the Wednesday, July 2 episode of Alex Cooper’s Call Her Daddy podcast to promote her new movie The Old Guard 2. During a long conversation regarding her dating habits and life as a single mom to daughters Jackson, 12, and August, 9, the Oscar winner said that while she would like a long-term relationship, she is not interested in the label a marriage provides.
“Let me just be clear. Marriage is a long-term commitment, and I think I want long-term commitment. I just don’t need to get married,” Theron said. “So I just wanna clarify that.”
“I will tell you in all honesty and the work that I’ve done on myself, I think a lot of that also has to do with the fact that I have a tremendous fear of not being able to get out of something, and that’s, again, me just understanding me, right?” the Mad Max: Fury Road star added. “Obviously by California laws, after seven years, you’re in a f—– marriage, whether you walk down the aisle, sign a piece of paper, it’s 50-50, bitch. Let’s just be clear. My semantics is crazy, but if I were to find a relationship, I would think of it as something that I’m aiming for long term.”
Theron famously dated dated actors like Craig Bierko, Stuart Townsend and Sean Penn, as well as well as Third Eye Blind frontman Stephan Jenkins, during the 2000s and 2010s, and she has openly discussed her disinterest in getting married multiple times over the years.
Theron said throughout her podcast interview with Cooper, 30, that she has had more casual dating and sexual experiences in recent years; at one point, she stated that she is “having the kind of sex I never had in my twenties or in my thirties.”
“I’ve never been somebody that really wants to like jump from one thing to another,” Theron said of her own dating history. “From the time that I was in relationships, I was in one relationship after another relationship after another relationship. And so when I earlier said, I’m having sex now like I never had before, is because I’m not in relationships. And it’s not because I don’t wanna be in relationships, but I’m seeing things for what they are, right? I’m not trying to force a circle into a square or whatever the f—– American saying is … But when I meet somebody, I can see where it’s gonna go pretty quickly.”

She also admitted that she feels she used to “lose herself” while she was in relationships in the past and said “great girlfriends” have always helped put herself back together after unhealthy relationships.
“I used to be a person that would watch herself, would also attract narcissists, men who wanted me to kind of treat them that way,” she said. “And if I didn’t, there was a lot of conflict, and I actually don’t like conflict. People are always surprised I don’t like conflict, but when I feel like I feel like I have to choose between conflict or just placating, then I’ll placate because I don’t want the conflict.”
