Chris Evans put plenty of thought into popping the question to his now-wife, Alba Baptista.
“I proposed to my wife in Portuguese,” Evans, 43, told The Knot at the Saturday, June 7, premiere of his new movie Materialists. “She’s Portuguese, so I learned how to say, ‘Will you marry me?’ in Portuguese. I had practiced it all week.”
He added, “I had practiced it so much that while I’d be making breakfast and you almost just start saying it out loud. Like, ‘Oh God, that’s not just a song that’s stuck in my head! It’s gonna let the cat out of the bag.’”
Luckily, Evans didn’t slip up and accidentally blurt out his question before the big moment.

“I got really nervous when it came time to do it,” he recalled. “I actually think I screwed it up, but I still know it.”
Evans and Baptista, 27, were first romantically linked in 2021, publicly debuting their relationship almost two years later.
“A look back at 2022 ❤️❤️❤️,” the Marvel star wrote via Instagram in January 2023, sharing a video of the pair attempting to scare one another in their home.
That same month, a source exclusively told Us Weekly that Evans was “serious” about Baptista.
“This is the most committed anyone can remember him being in a very long time, if not ever,” the insider told Us, noting they were enjoying the “quiet life” together in Evans’ native Massachusetts.
Evans also pumped the brakes on his career amid their blossoming romance.
“I haven’t worked all year and I don’t plan to, which has been lovely,” he told GQ in a September 2023 profile. “My girlfriend that I’ve had for a while, when we began dating, I was like: ‘Yeah, I do one movie a year. I try to never work now.’ And then, after, like, a few months of dating, boom, guess what? We’re living in Atlanta for a year [for filming]. Get ready. And even when that year was happening, I was like, man, never again.”

Us confirmed that same month that Evans and Baptista got married in Cape Cod. They never formally announced their engagement beforehand.
“It was really, really great. We kinda had two ceremonies,” Evans gushed of their nuptials during an October 2023 appearance at New York Comic Con. “We had one on the East Coast. We did one in Portugal.”
He continued, “They were wonderful and beautiful. It’s a lot of planning a wedding. For those of you who are married, it takes a lot out of you. Now that we’re through that, we’ve just kinda been enjoying life, gearing up for autumn, my favorite season. It’s, like, the best time of year right now. Now we’re just relaxing and enjoying life and reflecting.”
