Christopher Briney Dishes on The Summer I Turned Pretty’s Peach Scene and Why It Wasn’t Very Glamorous

  • Christopher Briney explained what really happened during The Summer I Turned Pretty peach scene with Lola Tung’s Belly
  • The actor assured fans that things aren’t always as steamy on set as they are on the screen
  • “It was awful,” Briney said of a particular fan-favorite scene

Christopher Briney may have steamy love triangle scenes on television, but he assures fans that his work on camera isn’t always as glamorous as it may seem.

In a conversation with Deadline published on Thursday, Aug. 7, the 27-year-old Summer I Turned Pretty star shared some insight on what actors sometimes go through on set to get the perfect shot.

“What was going through my mind was all the gnats that were flying into my mouth because it was awful,” Briney said of the peach stand scene in episode 5 of the show’s third and final season.

The moment saw his character, Conrad Fisher, on the side of a road as he and Belly (Lola Tung) stopped for peaches at a stand.

As she bit into the fruit, he lifted his shirt to slowly wipe the juice from her mouth during an intense moment between the two as she prepared to marry his brother, Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno).

Briney added, “They film it in higher frame, so they can slow it down, watching the playback and slow mo[tion].”

He recalled The Summer I Turned Pretty author and show creator Jenny Han telling him, “As I breathed in, a gnat went into my mouth, and then I breathed out, and it came out.”

“I don’t know what it was doing in there, but that’s my memory,” Briney said.

The Mean Girls actor also discussed why wiping Belly’s mouth in such a sensual way wasn’t only risky because she’s set to marry his brother, but because his character also has a peach allergy.

“I think it’s sort of like an Icarus moment where he loses touch with reality for a second,” Briney told the outlet. “What’s going through his mind? As much as I don’t think it’s a sin to wipe something off somebody’s face, what else was he gonna use? ‘Oh let me go to the car and get a napkin.’ There aren’t napkins in that car. I think that he loses touch with what is correct, and I think puts himself in sort of a dangerous place.”

However, it wouldn’t be the first time the Dalíland actor has lost touch with reality for the role.

Last month, Briney spoke with PEOPLE about how he can sometimes take on a bit of method acting, immersing himself in what his character is feeling to bring it to life on the small screen, even if it means a bit of real-life hostility.

“I probably went too far,” Briney said of his antics during last season’s finale — both when the cameras were rolling and when they weren’t. “I kept going after they cut.”

Casalegno, 25, was present for the exclusive interview and quipped that Briney decided, “’Today’s a good day to method act, for the entire day.'”

The Summer I Turned Pretty is now streaming on Prime Video.
