  • Danes and Dancy maintain their children’s privacy while occasionally sharing funny stories about them

Claire Danes’ home with husband Hugh Dancy includes three kids.

The actors, who met on the set of the 2007 movie Evening, have been married since 2009. Over the course of their marriage, the pair have welcomed one daughter and two sons, Cyrus and Rowan.

“Hugh was just the right partner for me. I got very, very lucky,” Danes told Elle in February 2013. “There’s only so much credit you can take when it just sort of works, you know?”

The My So-Called Life alum told the magazine that she had always envisioned having children. “I’ve always wanted to have kids, but I’m glad I didn’t until now,” Danes admitted at the time. “When I was thinking about [working and being a mother] originally, I was really nervous about it.”

Years after welcoming their first child, Danes and Dancy told Humans of New York at the 2017 Met Gala that “having a child was the best thing that ever happened to” them, and joked that it is “constant company with terrible conversation.”

Here’s everything to know about Claire Danes and Hugh Dancy’s three kids.

Cyrus was born in 2012

Danes and Dancy became first-time parents on Dec. 17, 2012, when they welcomed their son Cyrus Michael Christopher.

The new mom told PEOPLE that she was looking forward to “getting to know our new Dancy” over the holidays.

Speaking to Elle in February 2013, Danes admitted, “I think I would make a lousy stay-at-home mom.” The Little Women actress explained that it “just wouldn’t suit” her.

“I feel so fortunate in that I’ve had this straight-arrow focus … that I wanted to act,” she said.

Cyrus was “excited” about becoming a big brother

Danes and Dancy’s eldest child looked forward to having a younger sibling.

The Fleishman Is in Trouble star revealed on The Howard Stern Show in 2018 that Cyrus was sweetly calling the baby on the way, “his baby.” She said, “He’s excited and showing a little ambivalence too.”

Rowan arrived in 2018

Danes and Dancy’s second son, Rowan, was born on Aug. 27, 2018, in New York.

Months before becoming a boy mom twice over, Claire shared on The Howard Stern Show that they had wanted to expand their family. “This was planned,” she said. “We’ve been wanting another kid for a while, and it happened.”

Dancy and Danes welcomed a daughter in 2023

Dancy and Danes added a baby girl to their family in 2023. A rep for the couple exclusively confirmed to PEOPLE that the actors had welcomed a daughter.

Dancy and Danes were spotted taking their newborn daughter for a stroll in New York City in July 2023.

Rowan was initially “less than thrilled” about his younger sibling

Danes revealed to Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show in 2023 that Rowan was “less than thrilled” about his family gaining a new member.

“Cyrus was sort of resigned to it. I mean, the worst has already happened. His name is Rowan,” she said. “But Rowan has more to lose like he has more at stake and he was categorically opposed to the idea.”

Rowan even suggested giving the baby to a family who didn’t have one of their own. “But then we talked about how when the baby comes out, it’s gonna be pretty dumb, doesn’t know a lot. So, you know, it’s gonna need assistance and some educating,” Danes said. “That was interesting to him. He liked the idea of being a sort of condescending presence.”

Meanwhile, on Today, Dancy shared that his sons had “mixed feelings” about having another sibling. “They’re excited about our baby. That’s good,” he said, adding that Rowan said he will “help” with the baby, but drew “the line at helping with diapers.”

Cyrus grew up on the set of Homeland

Cyrus was no stranger to the set of his mother’s Showtime series Homeland. “He’s the Homeland baby,” the actress told PEOPLE in 2015.

“I was pregnant with him filming. Third season, he was five months,” she added. “I have so many photos of him in various stages of development in Carrie Mathison’s chair.”

At 2 years old, Cyrus was already saying “Action!” according to his mom. “He’s a real set baby,” Danes said of her firstborn. “It’s really sweet. He loves the [show’s operations room] because of all the lights. It’s a great environment for a kid. It’s the circus!”

Danes used her experience as a mom in one of her roles

As a mother herself, Danes could connect to her role as the mom of a “gender expansive” child in the 2018 film A Kid Like Jake.

“That’s not the case with my son exactly, but I certainly, certainly understand what it is to have anxiety about him being safe in the world and being identified as other in some way and it’s a completely natural impulse,” she told PEOPLE in 2018. “I think that’s really at the root of this story.”

Rowan was adventurous toddler

When her younger son was 1 ½  years old, Danes revealed on Live with Kelly and Ryan that Rowan was “babbling away” and “trying to kill himself all the time.”

“His ability to identify the most hazardous object in a room is kind of uncanny,” the Golden Globe winner said. Thankfully, big brother Cyrus was there to sound “like an alarm,” signaling to their mom that something was wrong every time his brother tried to get into trouble.

Cyrus did remote schooling during the pandemic

Danes and Dancy’s eldest child was learning from home amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The Hannibal actor mentioned his then-7-year-old’s remote schooling during a radio interview in 2020. With him being an actor and not working at the time, Dancy pointed out that, unlike some of his friends, he was not having to try to work from home while also managing kids.

“That would be a whole other challenge,” Dancy noted. “I’m also really enjoying suddenly being able to sit, not literally, kind of looking over his shoulder, you know, while he’s in his school environment.”

Dancy hoped his kids would pick up an English accent

While filming Downton Abbey: A New Era in England, Dancy hoped that his American kids would pick up an English accent.

During an appearance on Live with Kelly and Ryan in 2022, the British actor confessed, “We spent some time in England, obviously, when when I was filming Downton and I, for a second, held on to the idea that maybe they would veer back into the right lane, you don’t mind me saying that, but that didn’t happen.”
