Five were shot and injured in a mass shooting at Brass Mill Center in Waterbury, Conn. on Tuesday, May 27.
A person of interest is now in custody, according to police. His identity has not been released, but authorities previously said they believe he is a man in his early 20s. The Waterbury Police Department (WPD) says the shooting began at approximately 4:40 p.m., prompting a mall lockdown and immediate police response, per WABC.
All five victims were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. None have fatal injuries, but some are considered serious, per the WPD.
PEOPLE reached out to the WPD for further comment, but did not immediately hear back.
“We believe this started as a conflict and it escalated,” WPD Chief Fernando Spagnolo said in a press conference. “We do know that there was one gunman at this time… armed with a semi-automatic pistol.”
Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont called the incident a “tragic mass shooting,” per NBC Connecticut.
“We are grateful to law enforcement, who acted swiftly,” Lamont said. “Our hearts break for the Waterbury community, the victims, and their families who have been impacted by this incident.”
Authorities have recovered items in connection with the shooter and the firearm used to commit the shooting, which have been sent for forensic testing, per WABC.

The mall was closed to the public, and federal organizations are assisting in the investigation.
