Damson Idris Explains Why He Thought He’d Be Fired Over Brad Pitt Scene in ‘F1’

Damson Idris isn’t new to the acting world, but there was one scene in his new movie, F1, that made him think he might be sent back to the minor leagues.

“It’s so funny working with Brad [Pitt]. He’s such a beautiful human being, such a giving actor,” Idris, 33, explained during a Wednesday, June 18, interview on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. “And we once did a scene where I had to scream in his face, and it was like the biggest scene for me. I was so nervous.”

During a break in filming the intense moment, Idris accidentally stayed in character a beat too long — and ended up spitting in Pitt’s face.

“It was an accident. It was a rageful scene,” he explained, adding that he then “watched the spit go to Brad,” who was shocked. Pitt, 61, however, just rolled with the situation.

“And then he kept going, and in my head I’m like, ‘Oh, my gosh. I just spat on Brad Pitt’s face.’ I was like, ‘I’m going to lose my job now,’” Idris recalled. “And I watched the spit the whole take, it was just there dribbling down.”

While the incident spooked Idris, he kept his job and stars alongside Pitt in F1, which hits theaters Friday, June 27. Idris plays a rookie Formula 1 driver who ends up on the same team as Pitt’s character, Sonny Hayes, an aging former racer who returns to the sport after working as a cab driver and professional gambler.

During his interview with Stephen Colbert on Wednesday, Idris confirmed that both he and Pitt both really drove race cars for the film. “We drove up to 180 miles per hour,” he explained, noting that he even “tried” to race against Pitt. “Brad is really fast. He is just such an amazing adrenaline junkie. He rides bikes.”

All of Pitt’s F1 costars have enjoyed discussing their mega-famous colleague during the film’s press tour, with Kerry Condon recently joking that she had to drink alcohol with her breakfast ahead of their love scenes.

Brad Pitt’s latest role will have plenty of fans making a pit stop at the movie theater. The actor was recently confirmed to star in the upcoming film F1, which explores the unpredictable world of Formula 1 racing. “I would be a guy who raced in the ‘90s,” Pitt told Sky Sports F1 in July […]

“They scheduled it for [8:30] on a Thursday morning. I was like, ‘Ah, come on,’” she quipped during the Tuesday, June 17, episode of The Late Show. “So I had a vodka orange juice for my breakfast that morning.”

F1 director Joseph Kosinski, meanwhile, joked that Pitt didn’t freak him out as much as one of his previous actors: Tom Cruise, who starred in the filmmaker’s 2022 film Top Gun: Maverick.

“Tom always pushes it to the limit, but at the same time is super capable and very skilled,” Kosinski, 51, told GQ in an interview last month. “They both have the natural talent for driving. But yeah, I could see Tom maybe scaring us a little bit more.”
