The actor, 67, who has been married to his wife Ann since 1989, admits he has a go-to when it comes to honey-do chores. “Listen, here’s my thing. I’m a guy who can’t cook,” he tells PEOPLE for this week’s issue. “I grew up in the city. If you wanted food, you walked maybe down the end of the block or you called it in. But I was a dishwasher. It was one of my jobs when I was younger that I loved and I was good at it.”
Now whenever his wife cooks, Leary knows his role. “I can do the dishes so I did them last night after dinner,” he adds. “If you don’t cook, you clean. It’s a good rule. “
Leary, who stars in Netflix’s No Good Deed and the new Fox series Going Dutch, sat down with PEOPLE for One Last Thing:
Last time I sang out loud I was just singing “Alison” by Elvis Costello 15 minutes ago. It’s also a great way to warm up my voice before I do a live gig. I’m not a great singer. I’m a great yeller.
Last thing I learned about myself As I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized certain things don’t mean as much — like I’m still a huge sports fan, but losing doesn’t bother me. The most important thing becomes your family and how they’re doing.
Last superstition When I’m getting dressed to play hockey, everything on the left side, shin pad, skate, it all goes on first. Then the right side. I’ve been doing it since I was a kid.
Last thing I do before I go onstage The guy who usually intro-duces me wasn’t able to, so I said, “I’ll just do it myself. It’ll be an inside joke.” A lot of people in the audience could tell, so it was like, “How big of an ego does this guy have?” Plus it made all of them smile, so I think that’s my thing now.
No Good Deed is now streaming on Netflix. Going Dutch airs on Fox on Thursdays at 9:30 p.m. ET.
