Diane Lane is at the center of an intense family drama in her latest film.
PEOPLE has the exclusive first trailer for Anniversary, which meets Ellen (Lane) and her husband (Kyle Chandler) as they celebrate their 25th anniversary and are introduced to their son Josh’s (Dylan O’Brien) girlfriend Liz (Phoebe Dynevor) for the first time.
Josh’s younger sister (Mckenna Grace) expresses hesitation about Liz, and Ellen soon realizes she taught Liz as a college student and says she was “radical in her ideology.”
Despite her husband’s insistence that people change, Ellen remains ardently opposed to her son’s relationship. As the trailer — set to a cover of Crowded House’s “Don’t Dream It’s Over” — shows, she seems to be proven right as Liz’s presence quickly creates tension between everyone.
Zoey Deutch, Madeline Brewer and Daryl McCormack also star in the movie. A synopsis describes the film “a provocative thriller about a close-knit family that is torn apart by an outsider with a dangerous agenda.”
“I’m grateful for this powerful, timely story and the inspiring, generous cast who brought it to life,” Lane, 60, tells PEOPLE in a statement. “Jan Komasa’s brilliant direction of Lori Rosene-Gambino’s script holds a mirror to our national identity crisis through the lens of one family. I’m so proud of my Anniversary family!”
