‘Doctor Odyssey’ Fixes Continuity Error After Fans Spot Blink-and-You-Miss-It Editing Mistake

Doctor Odyssey fixed the editing mistake that originally showed trees in a scene that took place out at sea.

UPDATE 4/15 14:35 p.m. EST:

A fan flagged the update on Monday, April 14, while showing the before-and-after versions, writing, “THEY FIXED IT. The tree has been removed. And it turns out they forgot to CGI in the entire top of the ship too.”

The scene on Hulu no longer had a tree in the background after the same viewer flagged an onscreen inconsistency.

While TV shows and movies have teams dedicated to making sure nothing goes wrong on the production side, things slip through the cracks from time to time. That’s where fans come in. Over the years, viewers have pointed out the entertainment industry’s mishaps including the famous Starbucks cup of 2019 that popped up in a […]

Doctor Odyssey is the most recent show to accidentally have a continuity — and editing — mistake.

After the Hot Tub Week episode on Thursday, April 10, a fan took to X to share a screengrab, writing, “In last nights Doctor Odyssey, while the ship was sailing around the ocean. a tree from the outdoor studio they film at (on land) could be seen behind Tristan.”

The scene on Hulu doesn’t appear to have a tree in the background, but the screenshot did show greenery behind Tristan (Sean Teale) despite them not being at a dock. In a behind-the-scenes video, the cast and crew showed off the real outdoor set with the ship docked with trees in the background.

Doctor Odyssey, which premiered in September 2024, follows Joshua Jackson‘s character, Dr. Max Bankman, on his journey to becoming the new onboard doctor of the Odyssey, a cruise ship helmed by Captain Massey (Don Johnson). The medical drama — which also stars Phillipa Soo and Teale — hasn’t been afraid to push boundaries with story lines such as Captain Massey expecting a baby with a character played by Shania Twain or Soo thinking she was pregnant but not knowing whether Max or Tristan was the father.

“[Cocreator] Ryan [Murphy]’s imagination is prolific and bizarre in its ability to hold [space] for the absolutely grotesque and absurd — and then there are his lighter and happier shows. All of that being inside of one man’s imagination is amazing,” Jackson exclusively told Us Weekly in March. “I will say that for myself, I have wanted to work for Ryan for quite a long time.”

Jackson praised the creative storytelling ideas, adding, “Ryan’s word was sparkle. He said, ‘Make sure that my show sparkles.’ And we have tried to make sure that this show sparkles as much as possible and just hope that the joy that we feel in performing it and doing it all together is what comes across while you’re watching it.”

The actor, who was previously involved in a high-profile fictional love triangle on Dawson’s Creek, was excited to explore something more evolved.

“Well, [our characters] didn’t have sex on Dawson’s Creek,” he quipped to Us. “I feel like Ryan’s approach to this is a much more adult approach than when I’ve done this on previous shows. It was a ballsy thing to do to not just have the triangle be consummated but to have them consummated together. I have to say [that is] one of the things I’m most proud of [with] us this year.”

Jackson teased that he was excited where the self-proclaimed potential throuple could go next.

“There are still certain limitations and restrictions to doing something on network television because of the standards and practice issues that you deal with. [We were] able to take something that is very challenging and daring and play inside of the box of network TV,” he shared. “We got to explore what you can and cannot show and still created a scene that I think is very sexy and challenging.”

Jackson continued: “It was within the boundaries of what we are allowed to do [and] that is one of the high watermarks of what we were able to achieve from directorial to writing to acting. Everybody came together to make something that you really hadn’t seen before — particularly on network TV. I think we did a pretty good job with that.”

Doctor Odyssey airs on ABC Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET and is available to stream on Hulu.
