A dog was safely rescued from an icy pond in St. Louis, Mo., amid frigid temperatures.
The St. Louis Fire Department recounted how the canine was saved after finding itself in a scary predicament on Jan. 19.
“In the grip of single-digit temperatures, a dog wandered onto the ice and suddenly found itself in a life-threatening situation,” began a message shared on the department’s official Facebook page on Monday, Jan. 26.
“The ice gave way, leaving the dog trapped in frigid water, unable to swim to safety as the cold quickly took its toll,” the post went on. “Within moments, our Marine #Rescue Task Force received the call and went to work.”
Fortunately, the rescue team was able to successfully wrench the pooch from the freezing pond.
“Crews launched, navigated the frozen conditions, and reached the dog just in time, carefully pulling it from the icy water and bringing it to safety,” the post said. “We’re happy to report the dog is doing well and is expected to make a full recovery. 🐾”
An accompanying video shows the rescue boat’s arrival and captures the moment the dog was pulled from the pond.
The post noted that photos shared beneath the video show “a survivor, safe and recovering.”
The pair of images shows the dog safely back on the ground and then in the fire truck, wrapped in a blanket to warm up.
Other dramatic pet rescues have made recent headlines during the extreme winter weather this month.
Also on Jan. 19, a 6-month-old Australian shepherd named Stella was rescued from the iced-over Detroit River in Michigan.
The Grosse Ile Police Department tried guiding Stella to land using an aerial drone, then enlisted the local fire department to help with an airboat.
Although Stella kept running away, rescuers were finally able to reach her and reunite her with her family.
The police department said in a Facebook post that Stella was “safely reunited with her family, who expressed their gratitude to all responders involved.”
The post also thanked animal control and residents who assisted with the rescue and concluded, “Job well done to all involved!”
