Drew Barrymore says one of her past boyfriends tried to move his mother into their shared home.
During the “Drew’s News” segment of the Tuesday, April 1 episode of The Drew Barrymore Show, the host, along with Valerie Bertinelli and Ross Mathews, discussed a PEOPLE report about a woman who called off her wedding after finding out her fiancé secretly bought a house with his mother.
“The story has absolutely gone viral, with many saying that when you get married you want a partner, not a landlord with a live-in mom,” Bertinelli, 64, said on the show.
Mathews, 45, joked, “My advice to her is if you move in with him and the mom, just be careful you don’t trip over the umbilical cord, okay? Because it’s still there.”
Barrymore, 50, then revealed that a similar thing “happened to me” in the past, though she wasn’t engaged at the time.
“I moved in with one of my first boyfriends and I was really excited. We get the most cute little house in Los Feliz, California. I’m like, ‘I’m gonna be a hipster with my live-in boyfriend. Oh my God, I’m Mary Tyler Moore!’ ” recalls the Charlie’s Angels actress.
“We move in, and he goes, ‘By the way, my mom is going to come stay with us.’ And I was like … ‘Okay, that’s so cool. Like, for how long?’ And he goes, ‘Like, maybe forever, indefinitely. She’s gonna move in with us,’ ” recalled Barrymore. “I literally go: ‘I gotta go. I gotta go.’ Are you out of your mind? Your mother? Have I met your mother?’ He’s like, ‘No.’ I’m like, ‘So I don’t know your mother,’ and he’s like, ‘No, I, I think you’ll be fine.’ I’m like, ‘I have mother issues! I’m leaving. Here’s my laundry basket. I’m out.’ ”
Barrymore has been married three times and shares two daughters, Olive, 12, and Frankie, 10, with ex-husband Will Kopelman. The star is candid about her dating experiences on her talk show, which has been renewed for a sixth season.

On the March 24 episode, she shared that a man ghosted her after going on a first date together. “I texted him, and I was like, ‘Lovely to see you again the other night.’ We went back and forth twice, and then he ended with, ‘Haaaaa.’ And I haven’t heard anything.”
“I would never do that. It doesn’t cross my mind to behave like that. Like, if you put a fishing pole in it, why are you not going to follow through?” said the 50 First Dates actress, adding, “It does happen to all of us — the best of us. Good people who wouldn’t treat other people like that.”
