One person is dead after a car plunged off a roadway in California.

Officers from the California Highway Patrol responded to a crash report on Malibu Canyon Road, north of Potter Road, at about 7:40 a.m., local time on Wednesday, Feb. 4, according to a CHP statement obtained by PEOPLE. The Los Angeles County Fire Department and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office also responded to the scene.

“Malibu Canyon Rd is reduced to one lane at Potter Rd in Malibu, with both directions alternating, and traffic control, due to a vehicle over the side. Take alternate routes,” the City of Malibu’s Office of Public Safety said via Facebook on Wednesday morning.

According to CHP, the incident involved a 2018 Tesla Model S, which was driving northbound on Malibu Canyon Road at an “unknown” speed. The driver suddenly made a sharp turn and veered off the highway.

“The vehicle went airborne and collided head-on with a dirt ravine along the mountainside east of Malibu Canyon Road,” CHP said.

Footage captured by KTLA showed first responders gathered around a red vehicle with visible damage to the exterior.
