Brighter days are ahead for Ariana Grande — but fans think she may be diving into her past on her new Eternal Sunshine tracks.
Following the release of Grande’s deluxe album Eternal Sunshine: Brighter Days Ahead, fans quickly started to read between the lines and wondered if she’s singing about her ex-husband Dalton Gomez and current boyfriend Ethan Slater.
Several fans on X are shared a clip of Grande, 31, as Cat Valentine in the hit Nickelodeon show Victorious, where she belts out the words “he didn’t say I couldn’t sing.”
One fan captioned the clip, “‘ariana you can’t talk about the divorce.'”
Another fan shared a clip of Trisha Paytas hysterically crying and captioned the post, “ariana repeatedly saying ‘i do’ in hampstead as a nod to her marriage with dalton and to her wedding vows.”
Meanwhile, another captioned the clip, “Ariana when signing the divorce settlement to not mention dalton’s name or anything about the relationship publicly.”
In “Twilight Zone,” Grande, 31, seemingly dives into her divorce with Gomez, which was finalized in March 2024 after they confirmed their separation in July 2023. In the track, Grande references the sci-fi show that debuted in 1959.
“Did I dream the whole thing? / Was I just a nightmare? / Different dimensions / Stuck in the twilight zone,” she sings of Dalton, who she begun dating in January 2020. “Is this a black-and-white scene? / If so, then I’m in the gray one / Hope you win for best actor / ‘Cause I had you completely wrong.”
In the chorus, she insists “it’s not like I’m still not over you” but “sometimes, I just can’t believe you happened.” Still, she sings “it’s not like I’d ever change a thing.”
On “Hampstead,” Grande addresses the critics who had choice words about her love life, reminding them that they know very little about what happened when she was living in Hampstead, North London while filming Wicked. It was during this time that she announced she’d split from Gomez — and confirmed she was dating Slater, who also starred in the Oscar-nominated film.
“I left my heart at a pub in Hampstead / And I misplaced my mind in a good way / Threw away my reputation but saved us more heartache,” she sings. “Yes, I know it seems f—ed up, and you’re right / But quite frankly you’re still wrong about everything / So far off, your seat’s nowhere near the table.”
On “Past Life,” Grande is moving on from a past lover — that seemingly didn’t know her at all. “You think I’m lost, but that’s just how you found me / Well, maybe I’m the stranger after all.”
“Always wondered what would happen if I let you lose me / Always wondered what would happen if I let myself need more,” she sings. “Might f— around and elevate my expectations / Now I’m (I’m), fine (Fine), to leave you in a past life / Yeah, I’m (I’m), fine (Fine), to leave you in a past life.”
In addition to the deluxe album, Grande released a short film, which explores the “love, loss, growth and the fleeting nature of memory, delivering a heartfelt cinematic experience that closes the door on this eternal sunshine album era.”
