The father of Boston Celtics star Jaylen Brown was arrested for attempted murder early Thursday in Las Vegas, authorities said.

Quenton Marselles Brown, 57, was taken into custody and booked into the Clark County Detention Center, according to jail records reviewed by PEOPLE.

Officers with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department responded to a stabbing in the 1500 block of South Buffalo Drive at approximately 5:45 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 20 where they found a male suffering from several stab wounds, according to a police report obtained by PEOPLE.

The man was transported to a local hospital and listed in critical condition. A man later identified as Brown was located “a short distance away” and was detained.

A door ding in the parking lot of All American Park allegedly sparked the altercation, according to an arrest report obtained by NBC affiliate KSNV reported.

Police arrived at the park to find Brown, who goes by Marselles, involved in a fight with the victim.

The victim’s girlfriend told authorities that they were inside their vehicle when an SUV parked next to them, and the passenger door of the SUV hit their car, KSNV reported.

The woman told police that Brown asked her boyfriend “if he wanted to go,” and the two began fighting.

Brown then “briskly walked after him while producing [an] unknown object from his right side,” the girlfriend said, according to the report. The man “swung his arm in a straight stabbing motion and struck [the boyfriend] in his back.”

The victim — identified by CBS affiliate KLAS-TV as Cross Tupuola, a 28-year-old youth football coach — was stabbed multiple times in the back and stomach and later underwent several surgeries at the hospital.

Witnesses told police that Brown allegedly stabbed the coach as many as 25 times, the station reported. When he was arrested, the 7-ft., 300-lb. Brown had “cuts, scrapes” and a broken toe, the station reported.

Brown made his first court appearance on Thursday and bail was set at $300,000. It was not immediately clear whether he was released from custody.

Brown was arrested for battery in 2016 and may have an outstanding warrant for his arrest in Georgia, per KLAS.

The Celtics star’s father is a former professional boxer who was the 2016 WBU World Champion and the 2015 WBU C.A.M. Heavyweight Champion.

The Celtics did not immediately reply to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

The defendant’s next appearance in court is scheduled for Aug. 26 at 8:30 a.m.
