FDNY Firetruck Strikes and Kills Cyclist in N.Y.C.

A man is dead after he was struck by a fire truck in New York City.

The New York Police Department confirmed to PEOPLE that police were called to a scene in Queens at around 4:00 p.m. local time on Saturday, April 19, after they received reports of a collision involving a bicyclist and a fire truck.

Police said that a man — whose identity has not been made public — was riding his bike on Juniper Blvd. when a New York City Fire Department (FDNY) truck turned off of another nearby street alongside Juniper Valley Park and collided with him.

“A preliminary investigation determined that a FDNY fire truck was traveling northbound on 80th St. and was making a turn onto Juniper Blvd. when the vehicle collided with an unidentified adult male bicyclist,” police said.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene, the NYPD added.

PIX 11 News reported that an FDNY spokesperson said firefighters were responding to a church fire at the time of the accident.

“There were two firefighters standing on the road. One of them seemed concerned, like shaken, like shocked,” eyewitness Miguel Vega told The New York Post.

“I just feel so bad for everyone. For the people in the fire truck, the families involved, everyone,” he added.

No arrests have been made, and the NYPD Highway District Collision Investigation Squad is still investigating the incident.
